Driver Identified in Thursday’s Fatal Crash

A 19-year-old Middlefield resident died instantly upon impact and a 20-year-old suffered serious injuries when their vehicle crossed the yellow lines while traveling along Meriden Ave. Thursday evening and collided with a tree.

Police are continuing to investigate a fatal accident Thursday that claimed the life of a Middlefield teenager and left a second man in Hartford Hospital with serious injuries.

Southington police said 19-year-old William A. Mazo was driving the vehicle, a 2003 Chervolet Avalache, around 3 p.m. Thursday when he veered left over the yellow lines and across the northbound lanes before leaving the road and striking a tree.

Mazo died on scene, police said. His passenger, 20-year-old David Lanning of Middlefield, also suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken by Lifestar to Hartford Hospital where he remains in serious condition.

The cause of the accident remains unknown. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said. The case remains under investigation by the department’s Accident Reconstruction Team.

Any witnesses or those with information are asked to contact Officer Jason Plourde at (860) 621-0101.
