Sunset Ridge Home Suffers Heavy Damage in Fire

A home has been severely damaged, but officials said the one resident home at the time was alerted by a smoke detector and escaped uninjured.

A Sunset Ridge Drive house suffered considerable damage and the homeowner was displaced following second-floor bedroom fire Thursday evening.

One resident was 135 Sunset Ridge Drive home at the time, fire officials said, but was not in the room where the fire started. The resident, whose name and gender was not released, was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and was able to escape the blaze unharmed before officials arrived.

Firefighters said the blaze occurred shortly after 8 p.m. and dispatchers were alerted that no one was inside which allowed firefighters to attack the flames and knock down the fire in just under 20 minutes. Firefighter remained on scene after to make sure there were no flare ups, but cleared the scene in just over an hour.

The house suffered considerable fire damage on the second floor and both smoke and water damage throughout.

The fire forced police to close Sunset Ridge Drive, which is a no outlet road located off of Savage Street in the vicinity of East Street.

The resident was displaced by the fire and was put up in a hotel by Southington Community Services for the evening.

The cause is still unknown, fire officials said, and the incident remains under investigation.

Further details were not released Thursday night.
