Students at John F. Kennedy Middle School were evacuated this morning after a gas leak was reported inside the school.

Southington police and firefighters were on scene at about 9:45 a.m. and students were back in school about 30 minutes later. Students stayed warm in school buses while police and firefighters investigated.

About 800 students are enrolled in the South Main Street school.

The time reported in this article is not accurate. The evacuation of the building was called at 8:45-8:50am and the children had to exit the school in the bitter cold without time to get their coats out of their lockers. They had to as a group walk the length of the rear parking lot and along Route 10 South Main Street with the hard crunchy snow piled up alongside the road and load multiple busses that were on the other side of the school. They were held on the busses for at least an hour without their coats on. It was very cold! This is the Third Such Construction Related evacuation instance so far this school year that I am aware of. 1.) Gas Leak 2.) Tripped Smoke Alarm/Detectors 3.) Gas Leak /Strong Chemical Odor in the Building. Is it safe for this building to be occupied during construction?
