Guilford Woman Charged in Drug Fraud Scam

Police said Amanda DeMaio forged prescriptions in an effort to receive painkillers from local pharmacies.

A Guilford woman is facing charges stemming from an attempted drug fraud scam to receive Oxycodone after two attempts to use a fake prescription failed at neighboring pharmacies in downtown Southington, police said.

Amanda L. DeMaio, of 32 Boston Post Road in Guilford, was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday on charges of second-degree forgery, two counts of criminal attempt to obtain narcotics and two counts of obtaining drugs through fraud.

DeMaio, 24, was released on a promise to appear and is due back in Bristol Superior Court on August 19 according to court records.

Police said DeMaio had attempted to forge a prescription for Oxycodone in May, traveling to the Walgreens Pharmacy at 359 Main St. to have it filled. When she failed to produce an ID, however, pharmacy technicians declined her request and she left the store.

“She went from Walgreens across the street to CVS and tried again, but the staff at Walgreens had called over to warn them of what happened and she was denied a second time,” said Southington Police Sgt. Lowell DePalma.

The scheme was part of an ongoing effort by DeMaio, police said, which also included attempts in Milford, Ansonia and Middletown.

Milford police arrested DeMaio in May on charges of possession of narcotics, failure to keep narcotics in original container, use of drug paraphernalia, obtaining controlled drugs through fraud, attempt to commit sixth-degree larceny, criminal impersonation and interfering with an officer.

She has entered not guilty pleas to each of the Milford charges.

Further charges could be pending in other towns, police said.
