Newington Man Charged in West Street Gas Station Robbery

Detectives this week served a warrant on a man they said was involved in the armed robbery of a gas station on West Street in November, one of multiple armed robberies he was involved in.

A Newington man who was arrested late last year in connection with an armed robbery at a West Street business is now facing charges stemming from a second case after police said evidence tied him to a November robbery at the Valero Gas Station on West Street.

Southington police served a warrant this week on Angel Delgado, 37, as he appeared in Bristol Superior Court. He was arraigned on charges of first-degree robbery and third-degree larceny. Delgado, formerly of 124 Brentwood Road in Newington, remains in state custody, officials said.

Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said video surveillance equipment and other evidence allowed detectives to tie Delgado to the incident even though he initially denied any involvement.

“The warrant alleges that on Nov. 2, 2012, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Delgado entered the store dressed in all black with his face covered. He pointed what was described as a handgun at the clerk and demanded the money from the registers,” Dobratz said in a press release.

A police report said Delgado was able to receive money and cigarettes totaling $2,211.85 in total losses for Valero.

It is the second time Delgado has been arrested by Southington police. The 37-year-old was taken into custody on Nov. 23, 2012, following a robbery that took place at the Country Farm Convenience Store on West Street.

According to reports from the Southington Police Department, Delgado entered the Country Farm during the evening hours of Nov. 23 and showed a weapon before demanding cash.

He was able to leave the store with approximately $1,300 and proceeded to get into a car driven by a woman who had a protective order against him, according to the police report.

Detectives said the department received information during their subsequent investigation that Delgado may have been involved and was staying at the nearby Residence Inn on West Street. When officers went to the hotel, they found evidence including the weapon, a fake gun, and the stolen cash.

Dobratz said Thursday that Delgado is under investigation for similar robberies that took place in surrounding towns.

“We’ve received questions about these incidents from other departments and our detectives are cooperating to provide what information we know,” Dobratz said. “We can’t say whether any connections have been established at this time.”

According to court records, Delgado is also facing robbery charges including four cases in Bristol and another in West Hartford, all stemming from incidents between October and November 2012.

Delgado is currently being held at the Hartford Correctional Center in lieu of $596,000 in bonds, according to the state Department of Correction Records.
