(Updated: 12:14 p.m.) West Street Reopened After Morning Accident Injures Three

The four car crash included a head on collision, police said.

Police are continuing to investigate a morning accident along West Street that involved head-on collision which left three people hospitalized with signficant injuries, according to officials.

One victim was taken by Lifestar Medical Helicopter to Hartford Hospital and is listed in "critical condition" and two others also suffered "serious injuries," according to officials.

The accident, which took place in the area of Winterberry Gardens along the northern section of West Street near the Bristol line. Four vehicles were involved, including a head-on collision, and it forced a need for three extrications.

"In 31 years on the job, this is the first time I can recall seeing three extrications at the same time," said. Fire Capt. Mark Saucier, who noted that the department used all the tools it had at it's disposal in the response.

Police spent the morning on scene with state Department of Transportation officials and fire officials at the scene. Witnesses indicated that a car skidded while swerving around another attempting to turn into Winterberry Gardens and it caused a collision in the opposite lane.

The Accident Reconstruction Team is working on the case and still has a lot of data and information left to collect, Sgt. Lowell DePalma said in a press release.

West Street had been closed between the West Queen Street and the Bristol line until 11:30 a.m., but has since reopened. Traffic still remains heavy, officials said.

Names of the victims have not been release and no further information is available at this time.
