Over 500 Attend Dinner to Support Mehovic Family

The first of two fundraisers raises money for the sons of murder victim Saudina Mehovic.

Over 500 people came out Friday evening to show support for two Mehovic brothers who witnessed their mother Saudina Mehovic's slaying at the hands of their father just one week ago.

The Southington High School pasta dinner fundraiser was organized by Elaine and Jim Grenier, neighbors who live near the Mehovic family. The two worked with their son Eli Grenier, 15, and Eli and his friends made calls to everyone they knew. Eli and his friends Ryan Perez, Ricardo Torres and Nick Ingel will host a second fundraiser today.

All money raised will be placed in The Haris and Emir Mehovic Family Trust at People's Bank.

The Mehovic boys, 16 and 14 years old, initially stayed with the Grenier family until moving in with their uncle in Plainville. Where they ultimately will reside is still being arranged.

"Telephone calls made by friends went out to many parents asking for help during the SHS pasta dinner fundraiser," said Elizabeth Gryk, a volunteer. "Those kids rose to this sad occaision to rally around for the boys."

The event helped raise $15,793, said Perez, and all volunteers could be seen wearing a purple ribbon that symbolizes support towards victims of domestic violence.

The second fundraiser will be held today June 18th at from noon to 4 p.m.
