Plainville Man Charged With Using Keys to Steal Wallet

Police said the 24-year-old first stole a local man's keys, then used them to get into his car and steal his wallet later on.

A Plainville man is facing charges after police said he stole keys from a local resident at a party in August and proceeded to use the keys to steal a credit card from the man’s car later in the week, using it to obtain gift cards at .

The scheme led police to obtain a warrant for Jamal Abdelaziz, of 6 Fleetwood Drive in Plainville, on charges of sixth-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation, third-degree forgery and third-degree burglary.

Abdelaziz, 24, was taken into custody at his Plainville home Tuesday but was released after he posted a $25,000 bond, according to police.

He is due in Bristol Superior Court on Oct. 11.

“The arrest stems from a complaint filed on Aug. 8 by a local resident who said his wallet was taken from his car, which had been locked,” said Southington Police Sgt. Lowell DePalma. “The man told police he had lost his keys earlier in the week and the person who stole the wallet may have had access to get into the vehicle.”

Detectives followed charges on the credit card and found it had been used shortly after the theft at the Price Chopper store on Queen Street. In reviewing the surveillance video, police said three men entered the store and one proceeded to guy several gift cards using the credit card.

The victim identified Abdelaziz on the video, police said, and officers were able to obtain a warrant for the arrest. Abdelaziz later confessed to the theft, which totaled $312, police said.
