Police: Berlin Man Started Fight Using Racial Slurs, Spit at Officers

The 23-year-old appeared intoxicated when he started a fight "for seemingly no reason" and used racial slurs, then spit at officers as they tried to subdue him Saturday morning, police said.

A Berlin man is facing charges after police said he wildly started a fight using racial slurs for seemingly no reason at on Queen Street early Saturday morning, punched through a glass sign and proceeded to battle officers in the parking lot when they tried to arrest him, police said.

Officers took Kent A. Carbo, of 239 Middletown Road in Berlin, into custody on charges of second-degree breach of peace, third-degree criminal mischief and interfering with an officer. He was released after posting a $1,500 bond, police said.

said Carbo, 23, had been at Denny’s around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday when he initiated a fight “with a group of Asian customers in another booth” for seemingly no reason.

According to witnesses, he began verbally threatening one of the members of the group and proceeded to call them racial slurs before a separate group of people stepped in and separated him, according to Sgt. Lowell DePalma.

Angered by the incident, witnesses told police he then punched a glass sign causing it to shatter before storming into the parking lot.

“It appeared he was intoxicated at the time and that was the only motive for his behavior,” DePalma said.

When police arrived, he attempted to run to the nearby Motel 6 but officers were able to cut him off. Instead of giving up, however, police said he proceeded to begin swinging and tell officers “don’t cuff me.” When they continued to pursue the arrest, police said Carbo began spitting at them.

Carbo is due in Bristol Superior Court for arraignment on Oct. 3, police said.
