Police: Bristol Woman Arrested for ‘Giving Discounts’ Totaling $1,200

Officers said Amanda Towne provided free tools to people known to her on four occasions between Oct. 31 and Nov. 12 while working at Home Depot, leading to $1,200 in losses for the company.

A Bristol woman is facing larceny charges and three other area residents remain the subject of an ongoing investigation into the theft of tools from the location on Queen Street last month, done through fake sales at the register, police said.

Amanda E. Towne, of 42 Paul St. in Bristol, turned herself into police late last week and was booked on charges of fourth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny. She was released after posting a $5,000 bond, police said.

According to a police report, Towne was working as a cashier at the Home Depot located off Queen Street when the thefts took place.

Sgt. Lowell DePalma said on four different occasions, Towne allowed people she knew to accept free tools by entering them into the system and them removing them as a purchase. The tools included a wide variety of items such as drills and saws.

There were three people involved in taking receipt of the tools, DePalma said, and the theft were committed on Oct. 31, twice on Nov. 10 and again on Nov. 12.

“The thefts were discovered by security personnel with the store’s loss prevention office and reported to police on Nov. 13,” DePalma said. “In all, there was approximately $1,200 in items stolen from the company.

Towne was terminated from her employment following the incident. The case remains under investigation, police said, and additional arrests could be forthcoming. Towne is scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court for arraignment on Dec. 12.
