Police: Case Closed With No Arrest in Alleged Pavano Extortion Attempt

Southington police were unable to obtain a warrant in the alleged extortion attempt against Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano after detectives said he refused to give a statement.

The has closed their investigation into the alleged extortion attempt against Minnesota Twins pitcher and former Southington High School baseball star Carl Pavano, saying there will be no arrest in the case.

Lt. Lowell DePalma said Wednesday that detectives made efforts to obtain a warrant for Southington resident Christian Bedard, but that the courts failed to grant the request after Pavano and his family members declined to provide a written statement in the case.

“Our detectives served the search warrant, gathered evidence and applied for an arrest warrant,” DePalma said. “The courts wanted to see a written statement from victim and his family. They would not give one so the court would not proceed with warrant.”

Court officials could not be reached immediately for comment Wednesday morning.

Bedard, 36, was named the target of an extortion investigation earlier this year when Pavano’s older sister, 42-year-old local resident Michelle DeGennaro, filed a complaint alleging that Bedard had used Facebook to harass her and threaten her brother.

The case came when officers executed a search warrant on Bedard’s home. The warrant stated that Bedard had threatened to reveal details of a personal relationship between himself and Pavano if .”

Bedard later released a statement saying that the comments came following a heated discussion and “.”

Messages left with Pavano’s agent, Twins communication personnel and DeGennaro were not immediately returned Wednesday morning. Bedard also could not immediately be reached for comment.
