Reaction to CT Shooting: Port Chester Police Send Cops to Local Elementary Schools

There are no threats, but police say they want local residents to feel safe.

In reaction to this morning's deadly school shooting in Newtown, CT, Port Chester police officers will be stationed at each Port Chester elementary school at dismissal time today.

Port Chester Police Chief Joseph Krzeminski said he too will be visiting the elementary schools as a precaution.

Reports from Newtown, CT, say that 27 people have been killed in this morning's shootings at Sany Hook Elementary School — with 18 children believed to have been killed.

Krzeminski said there are no threats against any schools or any reason to suspect anyone in Port Chester is in danger. Instead, he said this afternoon's effort is designed to make local residents feel safe and reduce fears as a result of the Newtown shooting.

Port Chester police officers are expected to be at Port Chester schools from about 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Police in other communities, such as White Plains, also dispatched police officers to local schools today as a precautionary measure and to put local residents at ease that local schools and children are safe.

Put an armed guard in each school, then we'll feel safer. Arm the teachers. If you make schools gun free zones, that makes everyone inside a sitting duck.

I don't think there's anything that can prevent these sorts of nightmares. There are just too many venues to secure. It's like spittin' in the wind. The essential question is: What the hell has happened to us? Every week it's another societal skid ... and crash. This one ... with kids ... this one makes holes in your heart. Little kids ... maybe 65 months old. I can't slot this anywhere inside.

The family fabric has unravelled. The rates of prescription drug use for kids has skyrocketed. Families are no longer their brother's keeper. The mentally ill are left to their own devices. This has nothing to do with guns. Evil is all around us.
