SHS Sports Wrap

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

The winter sports season is winding down. The hockey and boys’ swimming teams are the only ones left competing as the calendar continues to move toward spring.

Saturday, March 3 – Hockey
Newington/Berlin 3, Hall/Southington 2 @ Trinity College, Hartford

In a meeting of the two top teams in the CCC South, a three-goal first period was the difference for Newington/Berlin.

Chris Anderson and Justin Rose had goals in the second period for Hall/Southington (8-12-1). Will Thompson, Owen Kantor and Trey Lerner had assists for the Warrior Knights, who will play Rockville/Manchester/Stafford today at 8:30 p.m. at the Bolton Ice Palace in the first round of the CIAC Division III state tournament.

Friday/Saturday, March 2/3 – Boys Swimming
CCC West Championships

Mike Smigelski broke his own meet record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.86 seconds. Smigelski also placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.28 seconds.

The medley relay team of Jesse Cooney, Matt Duszak, Vlad Kiveliyk and Smigelski finished fourth in 1:50.10. Kiveliyk was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.62 and third in the 500 freestyle in 5:23.73.

Cooney placed sixth in the IM in 2:13.24 and fifth in the breaststroke in 1:08.42. The freestyle relay team of Cooney, Bryan Adie, Kiveliyk and Smigelski finished third in 1:35.49.

Friday, March 2 – Indoor Track
New England Championships @ Boston

Cherraine Davis completed a sweep of post-season honors by winning the shot put event with a throw of 42 feet, 5.5 inches.

Davis, who had earlier won the Class LL and State Open titles, finished 1.5 feet ahead of runner-up Katherine Simon of Amity-Woodbridge.

Thursday, March 1 – Hockey
Hall/Southington 7, New Fairfield/Immaculate 0 @ Veterans, West Hartford

Needing at least a tie in its final regular season game, Hall/Southington had no problems in gaining a state tournament berth.

Justin Rose and Sam Sloan each had two goals and an assist, while Trey Lerner, Chris Anderson and Ethan Schaefer also scored for the Warrior Knights. Anderson, Owen Kantor, Kevin Cop and Paden Cipolla also had assists for Hall/Southington.

Tuesday, Feb. 28 – Skiing
State Championships @ Mount Southington

With only one of its top four racers able to complete the course, the Southington boys team finished in 11th place in its first-ever appearance at the state meet.

Austin Florian placed sixth overall for the Blue Knights. Bob Chambers lost a ski and was disqualified, Sebastian Doughty was unavailable due to illness and Brian Chambers was unable to attend.

Austin Florian, Bob Chambers, Brian Chambers and Erika Florian were first-team All-State. The top 10 boys and top 10 girls are selected based on season-long performances.

Monday, Feb. 27 – Girls Basketball
CIAC Class LL tournament – Career 60, Southington 35 @ New Haven

Danielle Charamut had 13 points as No. 29 Southington (9-12) closed its season with a first-round loss at No. 4 Career. Maeghan Chapman added nine points for the Blue Knights.
