Southington Bridge Replacement — I-84 Road Closures, Detours Begin Friday Afternoon

Weekend travel through Southington and on I-84 are going to require patience this weekend as the replacement of the bridges over Marion Avenue takes place and the highway is shut down in both directions.

It all begins at 5 p.m. Friday, June 27 and the State of Connecticut Department of Transportation expects the project will be completed by 5 a.m. Monday, June 30. 

The project will require the closure of both the I-84 east and west bound exit 30 ramps promptly at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 27. There will be no access to Marion Avenue from I-84 for the duration of the project. As part of the project, the entrance and exit 29 ramps will be closed at 9 p.m. Friday, June 27 and will remained closed for the duration of the project.   

According to Southington Police, Marion Avenue itself on both sides of the overpass and Atwater Street at the intersection of Canal Street will be closed for the duration of the project to ensure a safe work area. Southington Police will have a manned and signed detour in place starting promptly at 5 p.m. Friday, June 27 and running until completion of the project to detour traffic around the construction site.

As part of the detour, an emergency parking ban will be imposed on certain areas until the completion of the project. These areas are as follows:

• The entire length of Diana Road
• Marion Avenue from Diana Road East to the construction site
• Wonx Spring Road, Old Mill Road, Knox Drive, Hull Drive, McArthur Drive, and Sunnyridge Drive
• Prospect Street from Diana East to West Street
• West Street from Prospect Street  to West Main Street
• The entire length of West Main Street to South Main Street. (NO on street parking in Plantsville Center)

Additionally, the crosswalk for the linear trail in Plantsville Center will be close during the project to keep persons using the trail from crossing West Main Street. The high volume of traffic traveling through the detour requires this action, police said. 

The department also said in its statement, "As a department we understand that this project may cause inconvenience to local residents and businesses. We ask that our residents avoid the area if possible to decrease the amount of traffic in the detour and work area.  We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this project."
