(Updated) Southington Fire Fighters Looking for Help to 'Fill the Boot' for Muscular Dystrophy [Postponed]

Look for fire fighters on Southington streets on June 21.

Update: Due to the impending rainstorm, the "Fill a Boot" event has been postponed to June 21.

If you get stopped in traffic on Friday, it will likely be by a fire fighter, not a police officer.

That’s because Southington fire fighters from Local 2033 will be out in Southington’s streets from 4 to 7 p.m. asking motorists to help them “Fill the Boot” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Fire fighters tentatively plan on holding the event near the green a few lights from their headquarters on Main Street.

The money Southington residents can toss into the fire fighters’ boots helps the MDA fund services for local people who are affected by muscular dystrophy, a neuromuscular disease. The MDA is a nonprofit agency dedicated to funding worldwide research in hopes of finding a cure for muscular dystrophy, ALS and other related diseases. It also provides health care, support services, advocacy and education.

"They’ve been doing it for many, many years and have made an incredible difference," said Jennifer Owen, MDA spokesperson, of the Southington fire fighters.

The International Association of Fire Fighters has raised millions of dollars for the MDA since becoming its first national sponsor in 1954 through the "Fill the Boot" campaign, golf and softball tournaments.
