Southington Man Arrested on Sexual Assault Charges

A Superior Court judge has ordered a Southington man held in lieu of a $150,000 bond following a domestic charge.

A judge has ordered a Southington man held in lieu of bond after he was charged with sexual assault and other domestic charges in Bristol Superior Court Monday.

Michael J. Hurlbut, 32, was arraigned on charges of third-degree sexual assault, criminal attempt to commit sexual assault, third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, disorderly conduct and first-degree unlawful restraint Monday but did not immediately enter a plea to the charges.

Hulbut, of 1574 Mount Vernon Road in Southington, was arrested Saturday morning following a domestic incident at his home involving his girlfriend.

When police arrived, the girlfriend was outside and police said Hurlbut was found in the basement. Statements were taken from each.

The case stemmed from a disagreement between Hurlbut and his girlfriend that became physical, police said. Further details are not being released at this time.

Hurlbut also has charges of violation of probation charge pending in Middletown Superior Court stemming from an unrelated 2010 arrest. He was convicted in 2009 of violating a restraining order and two counts of first-degree failure to appear.

He remains in custody in lieu of a $150,000 bond, staff with the criminal clerk’s office in Bristol said. He is due back in Bristol Superior Court on June 14 and could plea to the charges at that time.
