Southington Man Tased After Attacking Police

Police said he threw a plate and glass bottle at officers before being Tasered, threatened to "skin" them because they were officers.

A Superior Court judge has charged a Red Oak Drive man in a domestic case turned violent after police said the man threatened to “skin” officers and attacked them with a plate and glass bottle before the officers subdued him with a Taser Wednesday evening.

Michael Mann, of 23 Red Oak Drive in Southington, was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Thursday on charges of second-degree breach of peace, two counts of assault on an officer, interfering with officers, second-degree threatening, disorderly conduct, and two counts of criminal attempt to commit assault.

He was initially held in lieu of a $10,000 bond following his arrest Wednesday evening, but was released after posting bond following his court case, officials said.

Police said Mann, 46, was taken into custody after he became extremely combative with officers who were responding to a domestic complaint at 23 Red Oak Drive Wednesday evening.

“Dispatchers received a call that Mann was threatening harm to his sister and was at the home when he wasn’t supposed to be,” said Sgt. Lowell DePalma. “When officers arrived, the caller reported that he said he would be violent if cops tried anything.”

Officers entered the home and found Mann sitting at the kitchen table with a plate of pasta in front of him. He told the officers not to come any closer, according to a police report, and refused to talk with them.

As officers attempted to approach Mann, a police report said he threw the plate at one of the officers, hitting him in the leg. He then picked up a glass bottle and threw it at a second officer before getting up to charge them.

Police used a Taser to subdue Mann, who fell to the ground from the electric shock. When he recovered, he again tried to fight with officers but was handcuffed without further incident, according to the report.

Mann has a history of criminal offenses in the past year, including convictions for assault and driving under the influence, according to records available through the state’s judicial website.
