Southington Police Searching for Burglar in Charles Street Home Theft

Officers said witnesses saw a man between 20- and 30-years-old enter a home on Charles Street on Monday afternoon and said he left after stealing a loaded handgun.

Detectives are searching for a man they said entered a Charles Street home on Monday afternoon and left with several items, including a loaded Smith & Wesson 9-mm handgun.

Officers were called to a Charles Street home around 6 p.m. to reports of a residential burglary that had taken place. Southington police said according to owners of the home, the gun was taken off the nightstand from within the master bedroom.

“A witness observed a white male, 20 to 30 years old, average height, thin build, short hair, clean shaven and wearing khaki pants in the area going door to door claiming that he was selling roofing services,” Sgt. Jeffrey Dobratz said in a press release. “This male was observed in the rear yard of several homes in the area and he may have been taking photographs of some of the homes in the neighborhood. Another witness reported seeing a black pick-up truck in the area.”

Based on witness accounts, the burglary was estimated to have occurred between 4 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., police said.

Officers also received reports of additional attempted burglaries in the area including incidents on Lynn Avenue and Zwicks Farm Road. Police said during these incidents, residents reported the thefts of items including a digital camera, cash, jewelry and military medals.

“Southington police detectives and a Southington police K-9 unit responded to the scene to assist in the investigations,” Dobratz said. “It appears that the suspect (or suspects) gained entry into the residences through the rear windows by cutting the screens.”

Anyone who witnessed this male or black pick up truck in the neighborhood or who may have any additional information is asked to call the Southington Police Department Detective Division at (860) 621-0101.
