Thinking of Driving an Unregistered Car? Think Again

The Southington Police Department has installed new license plate reader, or LPR, technology in their cruisers.

Have you been driving an unregistered car for any myriad of reasons? It might be time to rethink your strategy because an infraction ticket is now just a photo away.

The has installed new license plate reader, or LPR, technology on several cruisers in an effort to both enhance compliance in vehicle registration and catch those who are driving their cars unregistered. The reader technology was first installed on Wednesday, in officer Brian Leppard's new Ford Taurus police interceptor, the Record-Journal reported.

The new technology, , is a black box that runs license plates through the state Department of Motor Vehicles database. The information is then scanned and police are alerted if a vehicle is either unregistered or operating without insurance.

The biggest concern for police are those who are traveling in an uninsured motor vehicle, putting other drivers at risk to incur excessive costs in an accident, Lt. Lowell DePalma .

Leppard told the Record-Journal Thursday that the readers will allow officers to work more efficiently while also reducing physical work:

"This is totally new technology. Everything else before was manually run," Leppard said. "This takes all the work out of it, basically."
