Three Arrested in Scrap Metal Theft

Police said the area residents jumped a fence to take copper and brass from a Flanders Road home in June.

Three area residents are facing charges in the theft of over $3,000 in scrap metal from a Flanders Road home, including a Terryville man and Bristol man who each have a history of burglaries and larcenies over the past several years.

Officers took Cassandra D’Anna and Philip A. Plourde, both of 4 Arnold Court in Bristol, and Dwight Sturgeon, of 438 S. Main St. in Terryville, into custody late last week after all three turned themselves in when learning there were warrants for their arrest.

D’Anna, 21, is facing charges of sixth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny and two counts of third-degree criminal trespassing. Plourde, 32, is facing charges of fourth-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit fourth-degree larceny and third-degree criminal trespassing.

Both were released after posting a $1,000 bond and they are due for arraignment in Bristol Superior Court on Aug. 1, according to court documents.

Sturgeon, 45, was arraigned in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday on charges of fifth-degree larceny, sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy charges to each.

State Department of Correction records indicate that he is currently being held in the Hartford Correctional Center on $150,000 in court set bonds stemming from ten active cases.

A police report said the three were connected through an investigation to a June 15 theft at a 593 Flanders Road home. The home is a private, gated residence but was hidden from the road by overgrown vegetation according to the report.

“Officers were dispatched to the scene early in the morning with reports of a suspicious vehicle that was parked out front, a Dodge Caravan that had been left off the roadway,” said Sgt. Lowell DePalma.

Police said an investigation revealed that the three had been involved in the theft of brass and copper from the residence totaling just over $3,000.

It wasn’t the first scrap metal theft case Sturgeon has been involved in according to court records. He has ten cases pending in Plainville, including accusations of scrap metal thefts extending back to March and various charges of burglary and narcotics possession.

Sturgeon was also convicted in 2007 on two counts of second-degree assault.

Although Plourde has no pending cases, he also has an extensive criminal record which includes assault and larceny charges with his last conviction in 2008.
