Traffic Stop Leads Southington Police to Extradition Arrest

Police said a Brookfield resident was wanted in Florida for his involvement in the sale of "schedule II" narcotics.

A Brookfield man is facing extradition to Palm Springs, Fla., after police said a traffic stop led officers to discover that he was wanted in connection with a drug sales case there from several years ago.

Patrol officers took Matthew K. Mudry, of 3 Signal Hill Road in Brookfield, into custody on Sunday morning following a traffic stop for driving an unregistered motor vehicle, Sgt. Lowell DePalma said Tuesday. Officers then discovered he was wanted in Florida, DePalma said.

Mudry, 25, appeared in Bristol Superior Court Tuesday and is being held in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond under state statutes as “a fugitive from justice,” according to court records.

Court officials said Tuesday that Palm Springs police have indicated that they would seek extradition and want to bring Mudry back to Florida to face charges that he was involved in selling schedule II narcotics sometime between 2009 and 2010.

Palm Springs police could not be reached for further comment on Tuesday.

Under Florida statutes, “schedule II narcotics” are any drug substances that carry a high potential for abuse, psychological or physical dependency. Conviction for illegal sale of these drugs carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.

DePalma said the arrest occurred Sunday morning around 9 a.m. after officers pulled Mudry over on Main Street. His registration had expired in January and was not renewed, police said.
