Committee in Favor of MMA Fights in Connecticut
Connecticut could become the 46th state to legalize the contact sport.
While it still isn’t a law, a measure that would allow mixed martial arts bouts to take place in Connecticut passed another committee. According to the Associated Press, the bill passed the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee 46-4.
Connecticut is one of the few remaining states to ban the full-contact sport that incorporates various martial arts styles. Last month, Wyoming became the 45th state to regulate the sport.
Despite not being able to fight official matches in Connecticut, Southington has seen it's share of MMA fighters. The town was previously the home of "Tha Dog Pound," which practiced off of Meriden-Waterbury Road.
New York, Vermont and Montana are among the states that still ban MMA, while Alaska simply doesn’t have a governmental body to regulate it.
MMA fighters strike and grapple through several five-minute rounds. A winner is declared by a knockout, submission or a decision by judges at the end of the rounds.
