When a blizzard left more than three feet of snow on parts of Southington in February, many local residents expressed frustration that they spent days wondering when, or even if, they would be freed from the grip of snow.
Although there were updates available on the town's website, many local residents and even public officials expressed concerns that the lack of communication left many in town with fear and anxiety should they be left in an emergency situation.
“One thing was clear, we need better communication and to find a get to get the word out,” said Southington Town Councilman John Barry. “In the future, we need to have better communication with the residents and this is one way that could help.”
Now the town is taking action to make sure residents have multiple options when it comes to staying informed.

Southington Town Clerk Leslie Cotton announced Thursday that the community will now have an emergency alert email system in place to provide alerts during weather emergencies, immediate police emergencies and more.
The system provides immediate relief as town staff and members of the Southington Town Council continue to explore whether Reverse 911 or other phone notification systems would be worth the cost.

Southington residents can register their email addresses on the Town of Southington Website to receive Email Notifications of any Emergency Information that is posted to the site. To register your email go to www.southington.org; click on “Email Notifications”, add your email address and place a check in the **ALERTS & EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS** box. To submit your email click “Join” at the bottom of the page.
Items posted to the “News” section of the website are also available on the town's Facebook page, which can be accessed by clicking the link provided.
