Five Council Decisions from Monday Worth Knowing About

A look back at Monday's council meeting and a variety of issues important to town residents.

It was a busy night for the Town Council Monday evening as they approved several motions that will change the way things work in town. Let’s take a look at the latest in Town Council happenings in today’s five things.

Regional Health Department Approved –

The town is one step closer to establishing a regional health district that would combine the health departments in Southington and Plainville.

The council approved a motion after a public hearing Monday that would combine the departments in an effort to enhance services while simultaneously reducing costs to Southington by over $100,000 per year, thanks to added support from the state according to Southington Health Director Charles Motes.

The project must now be approved by the Plainville Town Council, which will take the issue up during their meeting next Monday.

Stonegate Study Receives Further Go Ahead –

Council members voted unanimously to move forward with a comprehensive study that will look at a dozen ways to address problems along Stonegate Road, where residents have experienced sewage backups into their home on three separate occasions since 2007.

The latest approval, which comes at a cost of $60,000, will allow CDM Engineering and Consulting of Wethersfield to conduct further study after recently entering a project that included an on-site evaluation of 200 homes in the area and GIS mapping of the PVC pipes in town.

Overall, the council has approved spending in the amount of $73,800 on these comprehensive studies.

Bulky Waste Transfer Leniency Approved –

On April 2, nearly 300 people were turned away from the Bulky Waste Transfer Station after failing to renew their registration stickers. It will not happen again in April.

The Town Council approved a motion Monday that will grant leniency through the month of April for those who have a 2010-11 sticker and follow the regulations set forth by the town for use of the transfer station.

Hearing on 2011-12 Budget Set –

The Town Council will soon be tasked with determining any changes that should be made to the town’s 2011-12 budget and on April 25, they want to hear from you.

The Board of Education passed a budget proposal unanimously on March 30 that would allow for a $125.2 million budget for the fiscal year 2011-12. The budget includes a 1.29 percent increase over current spending.

The hearing, one of the last steps before the council is required to approve a final budget in early May, will take place at 7 p.m. at the DePaolo Middle School, 385 Pleasant St., and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
