Funding Senior Growth: Calender House Set for Possible Expansion

A new state grant secured by Southington's legislators will help the town expand the Calendar House Senior Center to meet growing needs of the senior population.

The Calendar House may soon be growing to accompany growing needs - and it's coming out of state coffers instead.

House Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz and State Rep. David Zoni announced Thursday that they have secured funding from the state for development and expansion of the Calendar House Senior Center.

“I’m pleased that I was able to help secure these state funds for Southington’s seniors. As the senior population continues to grow, we need to ensure that the town has the resources needed to serve and support our seniors,” Aresimowicz said.

Aresimowicz said the town has seen exponential growth in the past decade of those eligible for senior services and Calendar House membership and expansion is necessary to meet the need.

The community is expected to receive a $200,000 grant for the work at senior center, a grant that will be voted on by the state's Bond Commission in the first week of January.

“Southington has one of the highest percentages of senior population in the state, so a new senior center will be an important service,” Zoni said.

The funding will be used for a study on how to best expand the Calendar House Senior Center on Pleasant Street. Calendar House, which includes classrooms, a computer lab, a woodworking shop, a library lounge, a game room and meeting rooms, is open Monday through Friday for residents age 55 and over.

The State Bond Commission is scheduled to meet Friday, January 3rd at 10:30 a.m. in room 1-E of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford.
