Before the meeting got underway Tuesday, the council officially named Louis J. Martocchio as the newest member of the council, replacing the seat left vacant by .

"Lou was recommended and after much discussion, it was a unanimous selection by the executive committee (of the Southington Republican Town Committee)," said Council Chairman John Dobbins. "He has done a fantastic job in the past 2.5 years as assistant town attorney and I look forward to working with him in his new role."

Martocchio, a partner with the firm on Main Street, was sworn in Tuesday, with Leslie Cotton conducting the ceremony.

The town will need to find a new assistant town attorney, a position Dobbins said would be appointed by the council in the upcoming weeks. No candidates for the position have been named.
