Meet the Democrat: Beverly Skinnon

A look at Beverly Skinnon, Democratic candidate for Southington Board of Education.

Family information:
Married to husband Ned Skinnon, who is currently Director of the West Hartford Senior Center. We have two children, Robert Skinnon and wife Erika and Amy Skinnon Rogers and husband Eric, and one grandson Jonah Rogers. We moved to Southington 34 years ago when my husband Ned was appointed the Executive Director of Calendar House Senior Center.

Occupation: Newly retired teacher with Southington Public Schools; taught first-grade at Plantsville School for 25 years.

Political Experience: No previous political terms.

Other Experience:
My hobbies include gardening, cooking, and knitting items for my new grandson; active member of the Southington Kiwanis, serving on the Southington Scholarship Committee; current member of the Southington Elks Lodge where I have worked on such special events as Italian Night, the Scholarship Committee and the annual car wash to aid community projects in town; member of the Sorelle D’Italia in America- Sisters of Italy in America, including work of a fundraiser designing a cookbook compiled by members to support local projects and worthy causes in Southington; parishioner at Saint Dominic Church;  member of the Board at Large of the Southington Education Foundation.

Why did you run for office?
To stay connected in the field of education. I know the issues that face staff, as well as the students and have served on various curriculum committees including math, language arts and technology. I went through the renovation process with Plantsville School, and know the ins and outs of the education system.

What do you feel is the biggest issue facing Southington today?
Considering the current economic situation - being fiscally responsible, striving to do more with less and maintaining the same level of education for all of our students.
