Sampson Recognizes Volunteers, Salvation Army on House Floor

The efforts, done in partnership with several state legislators, helped raise over $30,000 for the Salvation Army.

The following was submitted by John M. Dooley IV, communications specialist for the House Republicans.

On the first day of the legislative session, State Rep. Rob Sampson recognized the Salvation Army and representatives of local charity organizations as well as local store representatives, on the floor of the House of Representatives, for partnering with House Republicans to raise money and help local families in need during this past holiday season.

The Salvation Army gave legislators the opportunity to man their red kettle collection drives outside of local Wal-Mart stores for an hour this past holiday season. Collections were done in Avon, Bristol, Cromwell, Derby, East Windsor, Naugatuck, Shelton, Southington and Waterbury.

The total amount of money raised was $15,391. Walmart will be matching this total with a contribution to the Salvation Army. The donation is part of Wal-Mart’s efforts toprovide hunger relief at Salvation Army programs across Connecticut, which have witnessed a significant increase in need since 2007 and provided 60 million meals throughout the country in 2010 alone.

“The real heroes of this effort are the members of the Salvation Army and other local charities. This is an example of what people can do when they help their neighbors in need,” said Sampson, “I am proud to have been able to participate in such an amazing cause with great results.”

The Salvation Army’s Major Champlin said, "We have all experienced the extreme demands the economic recession has placed on us during the past couple of years. We are thankful to all those who supported us last year and we hope that people will be as generous again this year. Your support is vital,” Salvation Army Major David Champlin said.

“At The Salvation Army, 82 cents of every dollar that is donated goes directly to serve hungry children, homeless families, frail senior’s citizens and needy veterans,” he said. “When you hear the bell and you see the Red Kettle please be as generous as you can be!"
