Southington Zoning Commission Tables West Street Development Plan

Commissioners taking time to consider public comments.

The Southington Town Plan and Zoning Commission has put a plan to rezone West Street on hold after some residents said they feared the area would become overdeveloped or impact their properties.

The commission held a public hearing recently on the proposal to redraw the boundaries of the West Street business zone, the goal of which is to make the area more attractive for development.

According to the meeting minutes, several residents and business owners in the area spoke in favor of the plan but just as many spoke against it.

Ron Tooley, who lives on West Street, said he worried the plan would increase traffic and that he felt the commission was squeezing out homeowners in the area. He also said the plan would turn West Street into another Queen Street.

He wasn’t the only one.

Other property owners in the area worried rezoning their properties would hinder their future ability to develop their properties. Several had questions and requested the map be redrawn to exclude certain parcels.

As a result, the commission unanimously moved to table the matter while commissioners processed residents’ comments.
