Storm Update: Power Restoration Begins, Schools Closed and Open Services

With 10,700 still without power, the town continues to work to accommodate residents as much as possible.

Garry Brumback and the continue to provide updates regarding the latest power situations in the community.

Here is a look at the latest updates, provided at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning:

CL&P/Electrical Update
Power was restored to over 2,000 customers Monday, according to Connecticut Light & Power officials, and 10,722 CL&P customers remained without power as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday

Brumback said Southington has a dedicated CL&P liaison, who is working out of the Emergency Command Center at the Southington Police Department. In addition, crews have been on the ground non-stop since Sunday evening addressing issues.

CL&P, police, firefighters and the Southington Highway Department are all on roads clearing additional items to open the way for vehicle traffic. There were nine closures still remaining.

According to CL&P officials, the full-time restoration effort is scheduled to begin later today and additional crews may be along to join the effort in town in the near future as well. If people come across downed power lines, however, residets should be cautious as some may still be live.

School Information
Southington Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 2. School Superintendent Joseph V. Erardi will meet with town officials, Connecticut Light & Power crews and other local entities on Wednesday to determine the best way to proceed for the remainder of the week.

Shelter Information
, at 388 Pleasant St., is the designated emergency shelter and is currently being utilized by 90 people. Beds and food are available for anyone in need. It is also a place where local residents can meet daytime t warm up and recharge your cell phones or other equipment.

The shelter is able to operate effectively of generator power, officials said, and have been able to maintain services without a hitch.

Warming Center and Cell Charging
Warming centers and cell phone charging stations have been established at the Calendar House, which is currently open 24 hours, and also at the .

The library does have electricity and will be open regular hours, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily, to assist residents with their needs.

A Warm Shower
The is offering free use of their showers to everyone, members and non-members alike, during this tough time. Residents shuld bring their own toiletries and children will need a bathing suit, according the Y's policy.

The YMCA is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Fire Hazards

The is warning residents about the use of portable heaters, packaged logs, candles, and burners. There may be a potential fire hazard as well as a carbon monoxide hazard and users should be careful to follow all manufacturer's recommendations.

Bulky Waste Transfer Station
The transfer station has been opened to assist local residents in their clean-up efforts, Brumback said. The station will remain open from 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. throughout the week, including Saturday. At this time, the station should be used for brush removal only.

Leaf Pickup
Leaf pick will not begin on Wednesday, Nov. 2 as originally scheduled. Leaf pick up will begin on Monday, Nov. 7, instead and a revised list will be published in the near future. No brush or sticks can be mixed in with the leaves, however.

Rubbish Removal
Waste Material Trucking Company has contacted Town officials to report that they will pick up trash from their customers, and they are on schedule.

Town Water Supply
Anyone on the town's water supply should be assured that they can continue to use the water supply without issue. The water is tested and safe for use, Brumback said. Those using well wter should be careful to test the water before use.
