Town Clerk Names ‘Daisy’ Southington’s Top Dog (Video)

The annual contest, decided by random drawing in the Southington Town Clerk's office, has helped promote dog licensing in town.

Daisy Spencer, a Laborador Retriever, has bragging rights as the town of Southington’s 2012 Top Dog.

The Southington Town Clerk’s annual contest last week led to her selection after a random drawing and the annual contest has proven an effective tool in helping promote doc licensing in town, Leslie Cotton said.

“The idea originally started as a way of encouraging owners to register their pets,” said Cotton, who took over the role of Southington Town Clerk in 1993. “We had just started to allow dog licensing through the mail in 1994 and we wanted to promote it. It’s been a popular contest ever since.”

After 19 years, it would appear that the contest has done well to serve its purpose.

The town currently has 2,079 registered dogs that have ben licensed in 2012, all which were entered into the contest.

Daisy was named the winner, followed by Molly Burnett, a spaniel mix, at number two and a basset hound named Maggie Vitale at number three.

Christine Spencer, Daisy’s owner, said the title and package that comes with it, which includes dog treats and other goodies, was a nice way to start her summer vacation.

“We are happy with the way this contest has gone over the years,” Cotton said. “It was simply a way to raise awareness and it kind of just took off.”
