Visions for Vacancies: An Opportunity on Main Street

The building that formerly served as home to Dryden Insurance in downtown Southington is still up for grabs. What's the best fit?

The "For Sale" sign still sits in front of the former home of Dryden Insurance, a company that moved to a new location months ago, and today we are asking you to fill it.

So how should the office space be filled?

Let's call this a modern spin on community planning - Patch's version of a charette, a digital drawing board where all ideas are on the table.

Each week we'll present a new vacant building and ask you to tell us what you think would be the best use. Forget what zone it's in, ignore setback regulations, dump lot coverage rules and all the other zoning jargon that puts people most to sleep. If you had your way, what would you like to see there? What would be the best use for the community?

We've asked this before, but with several likes and few responses, it's worth asking again.

Located at the corner of Main Street and Old Turnpike Road, still within walking distance of the Southington Town Green, there lies a large office building that is near ready for use if the right business comes along.

The office building was left vacant when Dryden relocated across town, so today we are asking you to propose how to fill it. Is it best left as an office or would you like to see something new in the area?

Don't worry about the town's zoning regulations and if you feel it's best, tell us you'd like to see it torn down. But what's the best way to fill it?

Tell Us: What's the best way to move forward with the Main Street business space?
