Bidding for Big Bird

Berlin man announces auction of sesame street sign.

Kudos to Berlin.Patch.Com editor Robert Mayer for picking up the following story:

Mike Baczewski, a former member of the Berlin Board of Education, is selling a Sesame Street sign which will be sold to the highest bidder on Election Day, November 6. The winning bid will be donated to PBS.

"It is not so much selling the sign but rather countering the attacks on PBS," Baczewski said. "It struck me as being funny that Wall Street was largely responsible for bringing our national economy to its knees yet Mitt Romney's message 27 days from Election Day is picking a fight with Sesame Street.

"Look I was lucky to get a job out of college and I could write my own check to PBS but I thought doing something creative like this would raise more money. I grew up watching PBS and I hope it's here for my children."

Baczewski said the sign was a display prop that a former employer was going to throw out.

"We'll have to see how much I can raise but I believe the last bid was $47," he said.

Mike actually posted a picture to my Facebook page on Tuesday of the Sesame Street sign (viewable in the attached picture), that he plans to auction off to the highest bidder on election day, November 6th. At first I thought he was just cracking a joke and sending me a picture he found on the internet, but this is a genuinely good deed being performed by someone that believes in what they believe.

The absurd notion made by Mitt Romney that a subsidized PBS is breaking the back of the American taxpayer, when the station only recieves about  0.000012 percent of the budget is becoming one of the most notable occurances yet in this election. As I watched the debate from behind my laptop that night, it took mere minutes for new memes, and other generated images to hilariously mock Romney's remarks.

I believe this act by Baczewski does more than mock the gaffe of the moment for Romney. This sends a clear message that actions speak louder than words. And I hope that PBS collects more checks than the one that Baczewski will donate in the long run just to spite Governor Romney's promise to cut funding for Big Bird...your thoughts?
