38-13 Win Over Rival Cheshire Lifts SHS to Undefeated Regular Season

The Turkey Day victory over the Cheshire Rams gives Southington fans a reason to celebrate as the Blue Knights took home a victory in their first game on the new turf at Fontana Field.

For the first time all season, members of the Southington High School football team had a chance to play a game at home – and what a homecoming it was.

The Blue Knights gave their fans a reason to celebrate on Thursday with a 38-13 win over rival Cheshire. The victory over the Rams, the inaugural varsity football game on the newly installed turf at Fontana Field, provided one last memorable moment for Southington as the team finished the season at a perfect 10-0.

Southington took control of the game from the opening kick-off, as the Blue Knights promptly marched up the field against the Rams defense en route to taking a 7-0 lead.

The Blue Knights never looked back.

The Blue Knights scored on their first four possession, the only non-touchdown coming on a field goal off the foot of Kyle Smick, as the team promptly marched out to a 24-0 halftime lead over the Rams.

According to the Record-Journal Sports Twitter feed, the teams proceeded to exchange blows in the third-quarter, with each team scoring as the Blue Knights put in another touchdown to take a 31-6 lead. The Blue Knights would put in another early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Cheshire scored a late touchdown to make the score final at 38-13.

With the loss, the Rams finished out the season at 6-4, ranked #13 in Class LL. Southington will seek to turn their undefeated campaign into a championship, finishing ranked #2 overall in Class LL, sitting just behind Staples High School.

Football playoff brackets will be released at noon, Friday, Nov. 23, but early indication is they will take on Glastonbury in at home.
