Blue Knights Championship Run Ended on South Windsor Walk-Off

A double in the bottom of the 8th inning ended Southington High School's bid for a CIAC Class LL championship Tuesday night.

For three consecutive games, the Blue Knights baseball team fought their way past challenges en route to their second consecutive appearance in the CIAC Class LL semifinals.

Unfortunately, that was where the magic ended for No. 18 .

The baseball team was outted from the playoffs in extra innings for the second straight year after South Windsor used a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 8th to win 6-5 and end the Blue Knights playoff hopes.

No. 6 South Windsor had taken an early 4-0 lead in the game, but Southington fought back and was able to eventually tie the game at five. The comeback was all for not, however, when South Windsor was able to score on a two-out double to end the deadlock and knock Southington from the playoffs.

For the Bobcats, it marked the second straight extra innings win after they upset No. 3 Bristol Central with a 4-3 win in 13 innings. They will advance to face Shelton on Saturday.

Southington's cinderella story had a heart-breaking end for the second straight year. The Blue Knights found themselves against Newington High School in the 2011 CIAC Class LL Championship game.

The game was laced in controversy, as , only to have the call reversed when the home plate umpire ruled on appeal that Spruill had never touched the plate.

The Blue Knights had entered the 2012 playoffs as the No. 18 seed, but found themselves in the semi-finals on Tuesday. The defeated No. 15 Danbury 6-4, No. 2 Pomperaug 3-2 and No. 7 Amity 3-1.
