CL&P Encourages Students To Live Green and Win

Prizes will come from Live Green – Win Green contest.

High school students throughout Connecticut Light & Power's (CL&P) service area are being encouraged to consider sustainable, environmental projects that could earn their school plenty of “green” to help implement those strategies and make their schools operate in a more environmentally beneficial manner.

This is the fourth consecutive year Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P) is sponsoring its Live Green – Win Green contest.  Students, through a faculty advisor or school administrator, are being challenged to demonstrate what their school currently does to conserve energy and be more environmentally responsible, and to propose a significant future “green” project they would like to implement at their school.

The winning high school will receive $20,000 from CL&P to help fund their proposed project.  Three other schools will be chosen as runners-up and each receive $5,000 awards from the company for their projects.

“Last year, we had a record number of entries from over 20 high schools and the quality of the work was truly outstanding," said Jeff Butler, president and chief operating officer of CL&P.  "This year's contest information packets are in the mail and the schools will see we've adjusted the schedule to give them some more time to enter.  Conserving energy and protecting the environment start with our youth, and its exciting to see them stepping up to our challenge."

Live Green – Win Green is open to all high schools in CL&P’s service area. Student organizations, classes, clubs, individual students and groups of students are eligible to participate with the supervision of a school administrator or faculty advisor. Participants must produce a two-minute video showcasing what they and their fellow students are currently doing to conserve energy and/or make their school environmentally friendly. Additionally, each submission must include a 1,000-word essay on how their school would use the grant money to “go green.” Multiple entries per school are allowed.   A panel of independent judges comprised of educators, environmental and community leaders will review the submissions and declare the winners.

Contest submissions must be made online at www.clpenvironments.com/LiveGreenWinGreen.php between February 13 and February 29, 2012 by a school administrator or faculty advisor.

Accepted entries will be posted on the contest website and the general public will have its chance to vote for their favorites from March 1 through March 15, 2012. The entry with the most votes – the “People’s Choice” – will automatically advance to the final round. Additional finalists will be selected by CL&P. Winners will be announced beginning in April, 2012.
