Due Date Approaching for Southington Parents to Request Half-Day Kindergarten

Parents must call neighborhood elementary school to inform them of their choice.

Parents tend to feel strongly about all-day kindergarten – either it’s necessary for students to catch up to ever-more rigorous curriculum or it’s rushing children into the demands of school too early.

And though Southington has opted to allow for both, now that the district has approved adding full-day kindergarten in the fall of 2014, if there are parents who want their children to attend a half-day program, they’ve got to speak up now.

That’s what School Superintendent Joseph Erardi told parents at an informational session Thursday night, according to the Record Journal. By June 14, parents must call their local elementary school and inform them of which option they prefer for their child, Erardi said. For the half-day program to be offered, at least 15 parents must request it, the article reports.

Whether a half-day program would be offered in the morning or afternoon would depend on which was most popular. Transportation would continue to be provided by the school district, the article says.

Final decisions are due by June 21. A letter will be mailed to parents informing them of whether the half-day program will continue and which class their child will be in.
