(Updated) Fun, Flash Mob Dance Break Out as Teachers Welcomed Back To School

Southington teachers got a jump - or rather a dance - on the new school year Monday with a surprise flash mob sparked during Superintendent Joseph V. Erardi Jr.'s speech.

Southington School Superintendent Joseph V. Erardi Jr. had just finished talking about his transformation over the summer, one which involved wearing shirts with no buttons on the collar, mastering golf for dummies and eating a spinach salad – with vinaigrette dressing, of course – instead of steak an potatoes.

The speech already drew laughs and cheers from the near 1,000 employees in attendance at Southington High School. Then Michelle Passamano, District Registrar and Executive Secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools, stood up as “The Eye of the Tiger” began ringing through the school auditorium.

“I told my wife as I left the house this morning, this will either be my best, or my last speech,” Erardi said with a smile.

The flash mob dance, which eventually got everyone involved, was designed to promote a fun atmosphere and lighten spirits of district employees as schools got back into session. More importantly, Assistant Superintendent Karen Smith said, it served as a way to unify the district for the challenges ahead.
