Girls Tennis Takes First Loss, Baseball Qualifies for Playoffs

A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

Girls tennis fell from the ranks of the unbeaten as positioning for state tournament berths continued in a busy week for teams.

Saturday, May 5 – Boys & Girls Outdoor Track
Middletown Invitational @ Middletown HS

Rhiannon Jacobs paced the girls’ team with a fourth-place effort of nine feet, six inches in the pole vault. Lauren Zdeblick was 30th at seven feet. Alison Vachon was 11th in the 100 at 13.22 seconds and Alyssa Lombardi was 47th in the 1,600 with a time of 5:53.60.

The 4x100 relay team of Zach Maxwell, Anthony Bonenfant, Nate Bonenfant and Jarrid Grimmett was eighth in 46.04 seconds. In the 100, Stephen Barmore (11.84) was 17th, Maxwell (12.01) 23rd and Grimmett (12.03) 25th. Barmore was 12th in the 200 (23.88) and Maxwell (24.91) placed 26th.

Anthony Bonenfant was 25th in the triple jump (35-4¾) and Steve Boyington (35-4) was 26th. Boyington also was 26th in the 300 hurdles (46.27). Travis Daly (42-4) was tied for 17th in the shot put and Josh Irizarry (32-0) was 28th.

Ben Gibbons was 22nd (54.31) in the 400 and Michael Sullivan (57.05) was 28th. Kyle Hamel (4:37.87) was 14th in the 1,600 and Damiaen Florian (5:00.01) was 45th.

Friday, May 4 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Farmington 0 @ Farmington

Dan Carbone had 14 kills for the Blue Knights (10-3) in the 25-23, 25-15, 25-16 victory.

Friday, May 4 – Golf
Southington 153, St. Paul 173 @ Hawks Landing

Dave Valentukonis led the Blue Knights (4-5) to the non-conference win with a 36. Jared DeGumbia (38), Joe Fazzino (38) and Brandon Wheeler (41) also scored for Southington.

Friday, May 4 – Baseball
Southington 5, East Catholic 4 @ Southington

Ben Nichols, Joe Rivera and Matt Sirois had RBI singles as the Blue Knights (8-5) secured a CIAC Class LL tournament berth with their fifth consecutive win. Ted Shaw doubled and scored two runs for Southington. Justin Robarge allowed two hits in six innings for the Blue Knights.

Friday, May 4 – Boys Tennis
South Windsor 4, Southington 3 @ South Windsor

No. 1 Matt Downes (7-6,6-1) and No. 2 Joe Enright (6-2, 6-3) picked up singles wins, but the Blue Knights (4-5) dropped their third match of the week. The No. 1 doubles team of Gary Beaumont and Zaya Oshana won, 6-4, 6-1.

Friday, May 4 – Girls Tennis
Southington 7, Manchester 0 @ Southington

The Blue Knights (7-1) bounced back from their first defeat with the sweep of the Indians.

Alejandra Gimenez (6-0), 6-2) won at No. 1, followed by Andrea Rasimas (7-6, 6-1), Caroline Rodman (6-2, 6-2) and Alex Barmore (7-5, 6-0).

Jessica Topper and Annette Kaminsky won, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Taylor Grucza and Cassidy Race won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and Susan Murphy and Emily Sheehan had a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 3.

Friday, May 4 – Boys Lacrosse
Simsbury 13, Southington 3 @ Southington

Kevin Cop, Joe Gentile and Kyle Macri scored for the Blue Knights (3-8) in the loss. Will Thomson had 21 saves for Southington.

Thursday, May 3 – Golf
Southington 163, New Britain 177 @ New Britain

Jared DeGumbia was the medalist with a four-over 39 as Southington won at Stanley Golf Course.

Dave Valentukonis (41), Tom Fischer (41) and Joe Fazzino (42) also scored for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, May 3 – Softball
Southington 9, East Hartford 4 @ Southington

Freshman Kendra Friedt struck out seven in four innings for her first varsity win for the Blue Knights (11-2).

Sarah Carangelo went 3-for-4 with a triple, while Sydney Ferrante, Alyssa Dumphy and Kaitlin Paterson each went 3-for-3 for Southington.

Wednesday, May 2 – Baseball
Southington 6, New Britain 1 @ New Britain

Brett Susi pitched five-plus innings of shutout relief and Ted Shaw had four hits as Southington won at Beehive Stadium. Matt Sirois had four RBI for the Blue Knights.

Shaw had a triple and scored four runs. Sirois had a pair of sacrifice flies and Matt DiNello added a triple and RBI single for Southington.

Wednesday, May 2 – Softball
Southington 16, New Britain 1 (5) @ Southington

Lauren Zazzaro had three hits and four RBI and winning pitcher Jordyn Moquin went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.

Nicole Rossitto had two hits including a triple and two RBI for the Blue Knights. Moquin allowed two hits while walking one and striking out four.

Wednesday, May 2 – Golf
Southington 156, St. Paul 167 @ Hawks Landing

Co-medalist Jared DeGumbia shot a 3-over 37 for the Blue Knights in the home win. Dave Valentukonis was a shot back at 38, followed by Tom Fischer (40) and Brandon Wheeler (41) for Southington.

Wednesday, May 2 – Boys Lacrosse
Southington 9, Northwest Catholic 8 @ Bloomfield

Kevin Cop scored four goals and Pat Hamel added three for the Blue Knights in the win at St. Thomas Seminary.

Tom Gallagher and Jared DeFeo also scored for Southington and Kyle Macri and Nate Leclair added assists. Will Thomson had 21 saves in goal for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, May 2 – Boys Tennis
Conard 5, Southington 2 @ West Hartford

Jon Sadusky won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Kunal Kataria and Luke Pfanzelt won 6-4, 6-3 for the Blue Knights in the road loss.

Wednesday, May 2 – Girls Tennis
Conard 4, Southington 3 @ Southington

Caroline Rodman won, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and Alex Barmore added a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles in the Blue Knights’ first loss of the season.

Susan Murphy and Emily Sheehan won at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Wednesday, May 2 – Boys Volleyball
Glastonbury 3, Southington 2 @ Southington

Dan Carbone had 18 kills, eight service points and three aces for the Blue Knights in the 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 8-15 loss at home.

Jeff Kolb had nine kills, while Chris Sherwill had 14 kills, 10 digs and seven service points. Alex Zajda had 45 assists, 10 digs and eight points for Southington. Peter DelBuono had 11 digs and seven points and Kevin Casserino added eight digs and 11 points for Southington.

Tuesday, May 1 – Girls Lacrosse
Southington 16, Conard 15 @ West Hartford

Carolynn Keal had six goals and Sarah Pelligrinelli added five as the Blue Knights (5-3-1) won at Conard.

Laurel Dean scored two goals, while Taylor Hilliard, Micaila Dean and Jordan Crowley each had one goal for Southington. Allie Abacherli had 12 saves for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, May 1 – Golf
Simsbury 148, Southington 163 @ Hawks Landing

Jared DeGumbia and Brandon Wheeler led the Blue Knights with a 39 in the home match. Dave Valentukonis (40) and Tom Fischer (45) also scored for Southington.

Tuesday, May 1 – Boys Track
Southington 85, Farmington 65 @ Southington

Stephen Barmore won the 100 (11.36 seconds), 200 (23.12) and 400 (54.13) for the Blue Knights (4-1).

Kyle Hamel won the 3,200 (10:14), Nate Bonenfant was first in the long jump (17-2) and Damiaen Florian won the triple jump (37-7).

Jarrid Grimmett was first in the high jump (5-6), Tyler Hyde won the pole vault (10-0) and Travis Daly won the shot put (44-3½). Southington also won the 4x100 relay in 45.83 seconds.

Tuesday, May 1 – Girls Track
Farmington 94, Southington 55 @ Southington

Rhiannon Jacobs won the pole vault at nine feet as the Blue Knights (2-3) dropped the home meet.

Christine Swol won the shot put (31-6) and discus (79-5) for Southington. The Blue Knights won the 4x100 in 52.13 seconds.

Monday, April 30 – Girls Lacrosse
Cheshire 19, Southington 4 @ Cheshire

Carolynn Keal had two goals, while Mel Reid and Sarah Pelligrinelli each had one goal for the Blue Knights in the non-conference loss at Bartlem Park.

Monday, April 30 – Baseball
Southington 4, Simsbury 1 @ Southington

Ben Nichols hit a two-run homer and Craig Frobel pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the Blue Knights’ win.

Joe Rivera had an RBI single and Dave Palladino a sacrifice fly for Southington.

Monday, April 30 – Softball
Simsbury 3, Southington 2 (8) @ Simsbury

Lauren Zazzaro had an RBI double with two out in the top of the seventh, but the Blue Knights dropped the CCC West contest at Memorial Field in extra innings.

Monday, April 30 – Girls Tennis
Southington 4, Newington 3 @ Newington

Susan Murphy and Emily Sheehan won the No. 3 doubles match, 6-4, 6-4, as the Blue Knights pulled out the road victory.

Caroline Rodman won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Alex Barmore won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles for Southington. The No. 2 doubles team of Taylor Grucza and Cassidy Race won, 6-4, 6-2.

Monday, April 30 – Boys Tennis
Newington 5, Southington 2 @ Southington

Gary Beaumont and Grant Ogrin won, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles for the Blue Knights in the home loss. Zaya Oshana and Alex Angelillo posted a 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles for Southington.

Monday, April 30 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Shelton 0 @ Shelton

Chris Sherwill had nine kills for the Blue Knights in the 25-15, 25-8, 25-22 non-conference win.
