Regular Season Wraps Up as Teams Look Ahead to Playoffs

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School

The regular season has come to a close. The postseason kicks into high gear this week for spring sports teams.

Opponents, dates and times are set for the baseball, softball, boys’ volleyball and girls’ lacrosse teams. The CIAC Class LL meet is Wednesday at Manchester High at 2:30 p.m. for qualifying members of the boys’ track and girls’ track teams.

The boys’ tennis team has to wait until Wednesday for the singles and doubles draws for the Class LL tournament, which begins Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at Hall High in West Hartford. The boys’ golf team will find out Thursday if it has qualified for the Division I tournament, which is slated for June 4 at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron.

Thursday, May 24 – Baseball
Southington 3, New Britain 0 @ Southington

Brett Susi tossed a two-hitter as the Blue Knights (12-8) closed out the regular season with the CCC West win. Susi walked one and struck out seven in Southington’s fourth consecutive victory.

Ted Shaw had a sacrifice fly and Ben Nichols added a two-run single for the Blue Knights. Ranked No. 18, Southington travels to No. 15 Danbury for a first-round CIass LL tournament game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

Thursday, May 24 – Softball
Southington 13, North Branford 0 @ Southington

Jordyn Moquin pitched a two-hitter as the Blue Knights (18-2) ended the regular season with their ninth consecutive win. Over that span, Southington has outscored its opponents, 134-9.

Nicole Rossitto had a three-run triple and a sacrifice fly. Alyssa Dumphy had a double and triple and Sarah Carangelo had three hits for the top-seeded Blue Knights, who will host No. 32 NFA in a Class LL first-round tournament game Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Thursday, May 24 – Boys Lacrosse
Southington 7, Farmington 5 @ Farmington

Kyle Macri scored four goals as the Blue Knights (5-11) ended their season with the road victory.

Pat Hamel, Joe Gentile and Kevin Cop each had a goal and Billy Thomson had nine saves for Southington.

Thursday, May 24 – Girls Lacrosse
Hall 15, Southington 3 @ West Hartford

Carolynn Keal and Alexa Luponio each scored twice in the regular-season finale at Hall for the Blue Knights (6-7-1). It was Southington’s third loss in four days.

Allie Abacherli had 20 saves for 18th-ranked Southington, which travels to No. 15 Trumbull on Tuesday for a Class L qualifying-round game at 5 p.m.

Thursday, May 24 – Boys Tennis
Southington 4, E.O. Smith 3 @ Storrs

The Blue Knights (7-9) rallied from a 3-0 deficit on the road to win their final regular-season match.

Jon Sadusky clinched the win at No. 3 singles, fending off two match points to post a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Kevin Wormer and Gary Beaumont won, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Kunal Kataria and Zaya Oshana were 7-5, 6-4 winners at No. 2 and the No. 3 duo of Alex Angelillo and Grant Ogrin won, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3.

Thursday, May 24 – Girls Tennis
Southington 5, Simsbury 2 @ Simsbury

The Blue Knights (11-4) closed out the regular season with a rare victory over host Simsbury. Southington finished the campaign with four consecutive match wins.

At No. 2 singles, Courtney Race rallied to post a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 as did the No. 2 doubles team of Jess Topper and Susan Murphy, (2-6, 6-2, 6-3).

Alex Barmore won, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Andrea Rasimas and Annette Kaminski won, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles and Cassidy Race and Taylor Grucza won a super tie-breaker at No. 3 doubles, 7-5, 1-6, 10-7.

Ranked No. 13, Southington travels to Newtown to play No. 20 Conard in a Class L qualifying-round match Tuesday at 1 p.m. The winner plays No. 4 Newtown at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, May 23 – Baseball
Southington 3, Hall 2 @ Southington

Matt Sirois, Phil King and Chad Mehmel had RBI singles as the Blue Knights picked up the CCC West win.

Justin Robarge pitched a three-hitter and also threw out a runner at the plate for Southington.

Wednesday, May 23 – Golf
Simsbury 142, Southington 167 @ Simsbury

The Blue Knights (6-10) concluded the regular season with the road loss to the Trojans at Simsbury Farms.

Tom Fischer and Brandon Wheeler each shot 41 for Southington. Dave Valentukonis finished at 42 for the Blue Knights, one shot better than teammate Eric Flood.

Wednesday, May 23 – Girls Tennis
Southington 4, Bristol Eastern 3 @ Bristol

Caroline Rodman’s 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles was the difference for the Blue Knights.

Alejandra Gimenez won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2, Courtney Race was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 2 and Alex Barmore posted a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles for Southington.

Wednesday, May 23 – Boys Tennis
Simsbury 7, Southington 0 @ Southington

The Blue Knights were unable to win a single set in the CCC West loss to the Trojans at home.

Wednesday, May 23 – Girls Lacrosse
Windsor 11, Southington 8 @ Windsor

Sarah Pelligrinelli and Carolynn Keal each scored three goals for the Blue Knights in the road loss.

Laurel Dean and Alexa Luponio also scored and Allie Abacherli had 13 saves for Southington.  

Wednesday, May 23 – Boys and Girls Track
CCC West Championships @ Willow Brook Park, New Britain

The boys’ team finished fifth with 62 points and the girls’ squad placed seventh with 60 points at the divisional championships.

Cherraine Davis won the shot put event for the girls with an effort of 42 feet, 10.75 inches. Teammate Christine Swol (31-4.5) was second. Davis also placed second (108-4) in the discus and Swol (98-4) was sixth in the javelin.

Travis Daly was first in the shot (44-6.5) for the Southington boys and also placed seventh (107-7) in the discus. Kyle Hamel was second in the 3,200 with a time of 9:56.59 and seventh (2:08.63) in the 800.

Stephen Barmore (11.86) was seventh in the 100, Steve Boyington (44.72) was sixth in the 300 hurdles and Tyler Hyde (10-0) was sixth in the pole vault. Boyington was sixth (5-4) in the high jump and Jarrid Grimmett (5-4) placed seventh.

Anthony Bonenfant was third in the long jump (18-6.5) and fifth in the triple jump (38-2). Nate Bonenfant was fifth in the long jump (18-3.5) and sixth in the triple jump (36-10).     

Southington was fifth (46.05) in the 4x100 and sixth in the 4x400 (3:48.39) and 4x800 (9:36.83).

Erica Kosienski was fourth (13.21) in the 100 and seventh (28.15) in the 200. Allison Vachon (13.62) was eighth in the 100 and Cyndy Woolley was eighth (1:03.16) in the 400.

Lauren Zbedlick tied for fifth (7-6) in the pole vault and Audrey Snyder (7-6) was eighth. Nicole Wershoven placed fifth (15-6) in the long jump and fifth (31-11) in the triple jump.

The 4x100 relay team of Kosienski, Wershoven, Vachon and Woolley was fifth in 51.63 seconds. The 4x400 (4:33.17) and 4x800 (11:18.51) teams each placed sixth.

Tuesday, May 22 – Boys Golf
Farmington 157, Southington 166 @ Farmington

Zach Zabach was the medalist with a 37 for Farmington in the win over the Blue Knights at Tunxis Plantation.

Monday, May 21 – Boys Volleyball
Glastonbury 3, Southington 0 @ Glastonbury

Chris Sherwill had seven kills for the Blue Knights (13-5) in their regular season finale. Game scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-21.

Ranked No. 7, Southington hosts No. 10 Simsbury in a CIAC Class L first-round match Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Monday, May 21 – Softball
Southington 19, New Britain 2 @ New Britain

Sydney Ferrante had two hits and four RBI for the Blue Knights in the win at Chelsey Park.

Rachel Harvey had three hits and Jordyn Moquin added two for Southington.

Monday, May 21 – Boys Lacrosse
Avon 6, Southington 4 @ Avon

Joe Gentile had a goal and two assists for the Blue Knights in the loss at Buckingham Field.

Pat Hamel, Joe Gambardella and Kyle Macri scored for Southington and Billy Thomson had 20 saves.

Monday, May 21 – Boys Tennis
Wethersfield 4, Southington 3 @ Wethersfield

The Blue Knights swept the doubles, but were unable to pick up a win in singles.

Gary Beaumont and Kevin Wormer won at No. 1, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Zaya Oshana and Kunal Kataria were 6-3, 7-5 winners at No. 2 and the No. 3 duo of Alex Angelillo and Grant Ogrin picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win.

Monday, May 21 – Girls Lacrosse
Simsbury 13, Southington 9 @ Simsbury

Sarah Pelligrinelli scored five goals for the Blue Knights in the road loss.

Carolynn Keal scored four goals and Allie Abacherli had nine saves for Southington.

Northwest Catholic 148, Southington 167 @ West Hartford

Dave Valentukonis shot a 40 and Brandon Wheeler 41 for the Blue Knights in the match played at Wampanoag Country Club.

Tom Fischer, Jared DeGumbia and Eric Flood each shot 43 for Southington.
