Schools Give 2.3 Percent Raises to Administrative Staff, 2.5 to Non-Union Employees

The raises, including a high of 3 percent for Assistant Superintendent Karen Smith, are designed to bring salaries in line with both those in the district and to compete with surrounding district, Board of Education Chairman Brian Goralski said.

Superintendent Karen Smith received a 3 percent raise – the largest of the group – in a year when almost all non-union workers were given 2.5 percent and administrative staff were given 2.3 percent raises.

The raises, considered to be modest but fair, are designed to keep non-union workers on an even field with their union counterparts and are part of an effort to help make the district competitive in finding and retaining employees, said Board of Education Chairman Brian Goralski.

“It is a blending that is in line with the increases given to the union employees (around the district),” Goralski said. “Teachers and AFSCME employees are receiving their raises based on contract. These non-union raises are based on what similar job classifications are getting in the district.”

Goralski said one exception to the rule was Smith, who as second in command in the district currently makes less than the principal at Southington High School. Goralski said based on this, the district needs to work to even out the pay.

“The position of Assistant Superintendent is second in command,” he said. “In the absence of (School Superintendent Joseph V. Erardi Jr.), she runs the show. Karen had good evaluation, was responsible for the implementation of a new program next year and done lot good work for us. It was a natural and necessary raise.”
