SHS Baseball, Softball Gaining Momentum Heading Toward Playoffs

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

It’s all about preparation and positioning for the upcoming state tournaments as the regular season comes to a close this week for spring sports teams.

Friday, May 18 – Boys Lacrosse
Southington 9, South Windsor 8 @ Southington

Pat Hamel scored four goals as the Blue Knights (4-10) won at home.

Kevin Cop had a pair of goals, while Joe Gentile, Tom Gallagher and Jared DeFeo each scored once. Billy Thomson had 21 saves for Southington.

Friday, May 18 – Baseball
Southington 2, Simsbury 1 @ Simsbury

A double play turned by second baseman Matt DiNello in the bottom of the seventh inning enabled Southington (10-8) to hold on for the win at Memorial Field.

The third double play turned by the Blue Knights came with the bases loaded and one out following an intentional walk. Craig Frobel pitched a six-hitter, walking four while striking out one. Dave Palladino had two of Southington’s three hits.

Friday, May 18 – Softball
Southington 13, Simsbury 1 @ Southington

The CCC West champions (16-2) avenged an earlier loss to the Trojans with the blowout win at home.

Rachel Harvey, Kaitlin Paterson, Sydney Ferrante and Sarah Carangelo each had two of Southington’s 14 hits. Harvey had a double and three RBI. Jordyn Moquin had two hits and finished with a three-hitter for the Blue Knights.

Friday, May 18 – Boys Tennis
Southington 6, New Britain 1 @ New Britain

Matt Downes won, 6-1, 6-0, at No.  1 singles in a sweep that led the Blue Knights (6-7) to the victory.

Joe Enright won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 and was followed by victories from Jon Sadusky (6-1, 6-2) and Nate Mullins (7-5, 7-5). Kunal Kataria and Zaya Oshana won, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 at No. 2 doubles and Alex Angelillo and Grant Ogrin won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2.

Friday, May 18 – Girls Tennis
Southington 6, New Britain 1 @ Southington

Alejandra Gimenez, Caroline Rodman and Alex Barmore picked up singles wins for the Blue Knights (9-4) at home. Courtney Race had to withdraw from No. 2 singles after a back injury.

Gimenez won at No. 1, 6-1, 6-3, Rodman won, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 and Barmore won, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4. Andrea Rasimas and Annette Kaminski were 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, followed by Jess Topper and Taylor Grucza (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 and the No. 3 tandem of Cassidy Race and Sarah Hoder (6-0, 6-0).

Thursday, May 17 – Golf
Southington 149, Hall 161 @ Hawks Landing

Brandon Wheeler shot a 1-over 35 as the Blue Knights (6-7) posted their lowest team total of the season.

Jared DeGumbia (37), Dave Valentukonis (38) and Eric Flood (39) also scored for Southington. Tom Fischer also shot 39 for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, May 17 – Girls Track
Southington 101, New Britain 48 @ New Britain

Christine Swol won the discus (80-1) and shot put (30-9) events and also was second in javelin as the Blue Knights (3-4) finished the regular season with the win at Willow Brook Park.

The 4x100 relay team of Nicole Wershoven, Cyndy Woolley, Allison Vachon and Erica Kosienski was first (51.82). Southington also won the 4x800 event.

Kosienski was first in the 100 (12.99) and the 200. Alyssa Lombardi won the 1,600 (6:02.19). Claire Manente won the javelin (93-0) and Hannah Chamis won the 3,200. Nicole Wershoven was first (15-7) in the long jump and Rhiannon Jacobs (9-0) led a sweep of the pole vault competition.

Thursday, May 17 – Boys Track
Southington 82, New Britain 64 @ New Britain

Anthony Oliva (19.34) won the hurdles and Damiaen Florian won the 1,600 (4:53) as the Blue Knights (5-2) closed out the regular season.

The 4x800 relay team was first in 10:30, Kyle Summa (2:09) won the 800 and Jacob Harton (11:26) was the winner in the 3,200. Travis Daly (44-11) won the shot put, Anthony Bonenfant (18-9) won the long jump and Ryan Daigle (9-6) was first in the pole vault.

Wednesday, May 16 – Softball
Southington 13, Hall 0 @ West Hartford

Rachel Harvey had three hits including two triples and also had four RBI for the Blue Knights. Jordyn Moquin had three hits and three RBI for Southington.

Kaitlin Paterson had three singles, while Nicole Rossitto and Sydney Ferrante each had triples for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, May 16 – Girls Tennis
Southington 4, Mercy 3 @ Middletown

Cassidy Race and Emily Sheehan teamed at No. 3 doubles for the first time and posted a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 win as Southington clinched a berth in the CIAC Class L team tournament with the win at Wesleyan University.

Alejandra Gimenez won, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Courtney Race was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 2 and Caroline Rodman posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3.

Wednesday, May 16 – Girls Lacrosse
Southington 10, South Windsor 9 @ Southington

Sarah Pelligrinelli scored five goals as the Blue Knights (6-4-1) won on Senior Night.

Laurel Dean had two goals, while Carolynn Keal, Jess Lee and Jordan Crowley scored once. Allie Abacherli had 25 saves for Southington.

Wednesday, May 16 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Hand 0 @ Madison

Dan Carbone had 18 kills, three aces, seven digs and 12 service points as the Blue Knights (13-4) picked up the non-conference road victory. Game scores were 25-20, 25-13, 25-18.

Chris Sherwill had 11 kills and seven digs, Alex Zajda had 39 assists and eight digs, Peter DelBuono had 10 digs and Collin Kjellquist added 10 service points for Southington.

Monday, May 14 – Baseball
Southington 3, Farmington 1 @ Farmington

Brett Susi pitched a four-hitter as the Blue Knights won at Tunxis Mead Park. Susi struck out eight and walked two.

Ted Shaw and Dave Palladino had RBI singles, two of Southington’s three hits.

Monday, May 14 – Softball
Southington 18, Farmington 0 (5) @ Southington

Jordyn Moquin went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI as the Blue Knights cruised at home.

Sarah Carangelo had four hits and scored three runs. Sydney Ferrante, Alyssa Dumphy and Lauren Zazzaro each had three hits.

Monday, May 14 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Maloney 0 @ Southington

Dan Carbone had 18 kills, five aces, five digs and nine service points in the Blue Knights’ 25-14, 25-22, 25-9 win.

Billy Rivera had six kills and six digs, while Collin Kjellquist added six aces and 11 points. Alex Zajda had 33 assists, Peter DelBuono eight digs and Tyler Nichols five digs for Southington.

Monday, May 14 – Golf
Southington 156, New Britain 179 @ Hawks Landing

Dave Valentukonis had a 1-over 35 as the Blue Knights won easily in the CCC West match.

Jared DeGumbia (40), Eric Flood (40) and Brandon Wheeler (41) also scored for Southington.
