SHS Baseball Standout Named 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year

Sal Romano excelled on and off the field, leading him to be named top player in the state.

Senior Sal Romano has made a name for himself this year as a pitcher with the Southington High School baseball team, throwing a no hitter and commanding the strike zone on his way to leading the Blue Knights into the playoffs.

His work, both on and off the field, did not go unnoticed.

The left-hander was named the 2011 Gatorade Connecticut Baseball Player of the Year Thursday, compiling an 8-1 record with a 0.39 ERA. He also batted .444 with two home runs and 24 RBI in 20 games this season.

“Romano is a real throwback who affects the game offensively and defensively, said Bunty Ray, head coach of Bristol Central High. “He’s an elite pitcher who can throw them all for strikes, and he swings the bat well.”

Romano hasn’t just excelled on the field, however. The 6 foot, 4 inch baseball star maintained an A- average through his high school career according to staff at Southington High School, and has volunteered in programs throughout the area.

He was an academic mentor to elementary school children and worked with the Mill Foundation for Kids, an organization which benefits children suffering from pediatric illnesses.

Ashley Ginasol, a public relations specialist with the Gatorade National Player of the Year program, said Romano joins an elite list that includes several current Major League Baseball Stars.

Yankees star Derek Jeter was selected in 1992 out of Michigan, Philadelphia Phillies Cy Young winner Roy Halladay was selected in 1995 out of Colorado and Red Sox ace Jon Lester was the 2002 selection out of Washington.

Romano continues to lead the Blue Knights as they prepare to take on Pomperaug High School Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury during the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s Class LL tournament quarterfinals.

He will attend the University of Tennessee in the fall where he will continue his baseball career.
