SHS Fall Sports Wrap Up

Take a look at how the season ended for Southington's remaining teams.


With the Thanksgiving Day football game now a memory, the fall season is officially over for sports teams. While the campaign didn't produce any state championship banners to hang in the SHS gymnasium, it was still a success with a bright future ahead.

Football - Nov. 24
Cheshire 41, Southington 30

Southington had a six-point lead at halftime in the first-ever game on Cheshire's new turf field, but the Rams scored 30 points after the break to down the Blue Knights (6-4) in the .

It was Cheshire's fifth consecutive victory in the Thanksgiving Day series. Southington offensive MVP Corbin Garry caught three TD passes and finished with five catches for 123 yards. Stephen Barmore completed 16-of-27 passes for 252 yards and also had a 1-yard TD run for the Blue Knights.

Barmore and Matt O'Connor each finished with 53 yards rushing for Southington. Andrew Walowski caught nine passes for 97 yards for the Blue Knights.

Girls Volleyball - Nov. 19
Class LL finals @ Wilby HS - Newtown 3, Southington 1

In a match that couldn't be much tighter, its second state title in three years as the Nighthawks prevailed in Waterbury. Game scores were 25-23, 24-26, 27-25, 26-24.

Corinne Horanzy had 23 kills and 17 digs, Tori Broytman had 21 kills and six digs and Danielle Kaminsky had 40 assists and nine digs for the Blue Knights (20-2).

Cyndy Woolley had five assists and eight digs, Kayla Padroff had 19 digs, Emily Durocher had seven blocks and Samantha Vitale added two aces for Southington.

Girls Swimming - Nov. 17
Class LL Championships @ SCSU, New Haven

Southington had a pair of 10th-place finishes to end the competition in 14th place with 119 points.

The foursome of Haley Marquardt, Alyson Baribault, Laurel Dean and Melanie Mongillo placed 10th in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:45.15 and did the same in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:55.09.

Dean was 12th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.23, six places ahead of Baribault's time of 1:13.20. Sarah Krzesik was 24th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:05.47 and Mongillo was 24th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.84 seconds.

The foursome of Molly Potter, Jenny Drozd, Krzesik and Emily Ferens placed 16th in the 200 medley relay in 2:09.30.

Girls Volleyball - Nov. 17
Class LL semifinals @ Foran HS - Southington 3, Darien 1

Tori Broytman had 22 kills and seven digs as the in Milford. Game scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.

Darien had been in a state final for 10 consecutive years before falling to Southington. Corinne Horanzy had 18 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, while Danielle Kaminsky had 35 assists and 11 digs for the Blue Knights.

Cyndy Wooley had 17 digs, Emily Durocher had three blocks, Kayla Padroff had seven digs and Samantha Vitale added two aces for Southington.

Football - Nov. 16
Southington 14, Simsbury 8

In a game played in the mud and slop of a rainy Fontana Field, Southington clinched a winning season with the victory over Simsbury.

Matt O'Connor rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Corbin Garry had 87 yards rushing on nine carries, including a 68-yard TD run in the third quarter for the only touchdown of the second half.

Girls Volleyball - Nov. 15
Class LL quarterfinals - Southington 3, Ridgefield 0

Corinne Horanzy had 14 kills and 11 digs as host Southington swept the fifth-seeded Tigers, 26-24, 25-11, 25-18.

Corinne Horanzy had 14 kills and 11 digs, Tori Broytman added 14 kills and nine digs and Cyndy Woolley had 10 digs for the Blue Knights. Danielle Kaminsky had 32 assists, 11 digs, two aces and two blocks for Southington and Sara Malicka added 10 digs.
