SHS Marching Band Kicks off 2011 Season

The Blue Knights Marching Band and color guard perform for families as the new season kicks off.

Monday night kicked off the 2011 season for The Blue Knights Marching Band & Color Guard, when families and friends came to see them perform.

After completing an intensive band camp schedule of eight-hour days from August 10 - 23, students from freshman to senior got to strut their stuff.

The weather cooperated and families were able to sit on the grass and watch the sun glimmer off of trumpets and shine through bright, colored flags as they moved through the air in synchronicity.

The performance is just a precursor to the playing season. The show was a treat for families but also served an administrative function. A membership meeting followed the show where dues were collected and general information regarding the events were discussed.

A fair amount of fundraising and volunteerism is required every season and organizers emphasized the importance of teamwork.

The total cost of running the marching band program for one season totals approximately $65,000 to $75,000, according to boosters, and much of the funding comes from ad sales in the program book.

Traditional fundraisers from catalogue, home baked goods and sub sandwich sales for Super Bowl Sunday are also part of the team's annual fundraising campaign.
