SHS Softball Off to Hot Start, Baseball Exacts Revenge

Take a look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

After a short first week of action followed by the Easter holiday, the spring sports teams had a full slate of activity during the school vacation.

Saturday, Apr. 14 – Boys Lacrosse
NFA 6, Southington 5 @ Southington

NFA dropped the Blue Knights to 1-3 by scoring three goals in the final five minutes of play.

Friday, Apr. 13 – Boys & Girls Track
Record-Journal Invitational @ Cheshire

Travis Daly won the shot put (44-2), while Erica Kosienski won the 100 meters in 13 seconds to highlight the Southington efforts.

The quartet of Stephen Barmore, Mike Sullivan, Zach Maxwell and Anthony Oliva won the 4x200 relay in 1:39.1. Barmore, Kosienski, Jarrid Grimmett and Allison Vachon won the co-ed 4x100 in 47.8 seconds.

Rhiannon Jacobs won the pole vault with an effort of nine feet.

Friday, Apr. 13 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Oxford 0 @ Oxford

Nick Powell had 17 kills, eight points, three aces and two blocks for Southington (4-0) in the 25-20, 26-24, 25-18 victory.

Alex Zajda had 31 assists and seven digs for the Blue Knights. Jeff Kolb had seven kills, while Chris Sherwill added five kills and six service points for Southington. Peter DelBuono had eight digs and Kevin Casserino five for the Blue Knights. David Shaughnessy led Southington with 10 service points.

Friday, Apr. 13 – Boys Tennis
Southington 7, Windsor 0 @ Southington

The Blue Knights (2-0) didn’t drop a set in picking up an easy home win.

Matt Downes won, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles and was followed by teammates Jon Sadusky (6-0, 6-4), Kevin Wormer (7-6, 6-0) and Kunal Kataria (6-0, 6-0) with singles wins.

The No. 1 doubles team of Nate Mullins and Gary Beaumont won, 7-5, 6-3. Luke Pfanzelt and Grant Ogrin won at No.2, 6-1, 6-1, and the No. 3 team of Alex Angelillo and Will Lefkovich posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Thursday, Apr. 12 – Boys Lacrosse
Cheshire 11, Southington 3 @ Cheshire

Will Thompson, Joe Gambardella and Patrick Hamel scored for the Blue Knights in the non-conference loss. Billy Thomson had 14 saves for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, Apr. 12 – Golf
Conard 149, Southington 165 @ Rockledge CC

Dave Valentukonis and Eric Flood each shot 40 for the Blue Knights in their season opener played in West Hartford.

Brandon Wheeler had a 41 and Jared DeGumbia rounded out the scoring with 44 for Southington.

Wednesday, Apr. 11 – Baseball
Southington 13, Newington 3 @ Southington

In a rematch of the controversial 2011 Class LL state championship game won by Newington, Justin Robarge went 3-for-3 with four RBI and allowed just two hits and struck out eight in six innings for Southington (3-1).

Jordan Gray scored three runs and Joe Rivera had a pair of doubles for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, Apr. 11 – Softball
Southington 16, Newington 0 @ Newington

Sydney Ferrante had three doubles and six RBI as Southington (5-0) used 16 hits to defeat Newington.

Winning pitcher Jordyn Moquin went 3-for-3 with a triple and allowed three hits in five innings of work.

Wednesday, Apr. 11 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Maloney 0 @ Maloney

Dan Carbone had 12 kills and 10 digs for Southington in the 25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 25-12 road win. Nick Powell had 10 kills, nine points and four aces for the Blue Knights.

Jeff Kolb had nine kills and four blocks, Kevin Casserino had seven points, Billy Rivera had three blocks and Peter DelBuono added seven digs. Alex Zajda had two aces, 16 points, 30 assists and nine digs for Southington.

Tuesday, Apr. 10 – Boys Track
Southington 79½, Hall 70½ @ Southington

Anthony Oliva won the 110 high hurdles (18.58 seconds) and 300 hurdles (45.5 seconds) for the Blue Knights (2-0).

Kyle Hamel won the 3,200 (10:31), while Travis Daly swept the javelin, shot put and discus events. Anthony Bonefont won the long jump, Jarrid Grimmett won the high jump and the Blue Knights won the 4x800 relay.

Steve Boyington added second-place finishes in the long jump and 300 hurdles for Southington.

Tuesday, Apr. 10 – Girls Track
Hall 102, Southington 48 @ Southington

Kate Wendt won the 110 high hurdles (19.38 seconds) and Nicole Wershoven was first in the long jump (14-1 ½) for Southington.

Rhiannon Jacobs won the pole vault (9-0), Claire Manente was first in the javelin (79-0), Cherraine Davis won the shot put (40 feet) and Erica Kosienski won the 100 meters.

Alyssa Lombardi was second in the high jump and added third-place efforts in the triple jump and 800 for Southington.

Tuesday, Apr. 10 – Boys Tennis
Southington 6, Bristol Central 1 @ Southington

A sweep of the singles led the Blue Knights to the season-opening win.

Matt Downes (6-4, 6-1), Jon Sadusky (4-6, 6-4, 11-9), Kevin Wormer (6-4, 6-3) and Kunal Kataria (6-2, 6-3) picked up singles points for Southington.

Nate Mullins and Luke Pfanzelt won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles and Will Lefkovich and Chris Hupper won, 7-6 (2), 6-2 at No. 3.

Monday, Apr. 9 – Baseball
Southington 10, Berlin 0 @ Berlin

Jordan Gray hit a three-run homer and Phil King and Ben Nichols tripled for Southington in the road win. Nichols also had a double and scored twice for the Blue Knights.

Brett Susi allowed three hits and struck out five over six innings in his first varsity start.

Monday, Apr. 9 – Softball
Southington 8, Bristol Central 1 @ Southington

Sarah Carangelo had a double and single to lead a 10-hit attack for the Blue Knights. Nicole Rossitto and Sydney Ferrante each had two hits and Jordyn Moquin finished with a four-hitter, striking out three.

Monday, Apr. 9 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Fermi 2 @ Southington

Alex Zajda had nine points, nine digs and 46 assists as Southington rallied for the 22-25, 19-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-13 victory.

Peter DelBuono had 10 points and 10 digs, while Nick Powell had 12 kills, six digs and two blocks. Kevin Casserino had nine points and five digs, while Dan Carbone had 19 kills, 10 points, 10 digs and two blocks.

Tyler Nichols, Vin Romano (two blocks) and Chris Sherwill each had six kills and Collin Kjellquist had three blocks for the Blue Knights.

Monday, Apr. 9 – Girls Tennis
Southington 5, Bristol Central 2 @ Southington

Southington used three singles and two doubles wins to pick up the victory in its season-opening match.

Alejandra Gimenez (No. 1) was a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner. Courtney Race won, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Andrea Rasimas picked up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 3.

The No. 1 doubles team of Annette Kaminski and Jess Topper won, 6-0, 6-2, and the No. 3 duo of Emily Sheehan and Cassidy Race went three sets for a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 win.

Saturday, Apr. 7 – Baseball
Greenwich 6, Southington 4 @ Greenwich

Ben Nichols had two RBI, but five errors led to three unearned runs in the non-conference road loss.

Ted Shaw scored three runs for Southington, which finished with only three hits.

Saturday, Apr. 7 – Softball
Southington 9, North Branford 0 @ North Branford

Nicole Rossitto led off the game with a home run and Southington cruised to the non-conference win as Jordyn Moquin pitched a no-hitter.

Rossitto went 3-for-5 with two RBI, Kaitlin Patterson went 4-for-4 with a triple and Sydney Ferrante went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Saturday, Apr. 7 – Boys Lacrosse
Southington 7, Westhill 4 @ Westhill

Pat Hamel and Tom Gallagher each had two goals and an assist for Southington in the victory in Stamford.

Ryan Langdon (assist), Kevin Cop and Will Thompson each had a goal for Southington. Billy Thomson had 16 saves for the Blue Knights.

Thursday, Apr. 5 – Girls Lacrosse
Southington 14, Mercy 5 @ Mercy

Sarah Pelligrinelli had six goals, while Carolynn Keal and Alexa Luponio each had two for Southington in the win in Middletown.

Alexa Mitchell, Jordan Crowley, Alyssa Gemmell and Laurel Dean each had one goal and Allie Abacherli had 11 saves for Southington, which dropped a 12-6 decision to Northwest Catholic on April 10 and battled Windsor to a 9-9, triple-overtime tie on April 13 to move to 2-1-1 on the season.

Thursday, Apr. 5 – Softball
Southington 15, Northwest Catholic 0 @ Southington

Nicole Rossitto went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBI and Rachel Harvey went 5-for-5 for the Blue Knights.

Sydney Ferrante had a single, double and two RBI and Jordyn Moquin pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Bulkeley 0 @ Bulkeley

Alex Zajda had 14 points, two aces and 18 assists as Southington opened the season with a 25-12, 25-8, 25-17 victory in Hartford.

Peter DelBuono had five points and Chris Sherwill had eight points, four digs and four aces. Dan Carbone had 10 kills and two aces, while Peter Masters had 10 points, three aces and 12 assists.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Boys Lacrosse
Xavier 9, Southington 4 @ Southington

Ryan Langdon had two goals, while Will Thompson and Pat Hamel (assist) each had one in the Blue Knights’ season-opening loss.

Joe Gentile and Kevin Cop had assists and Billy Thomson had 14 saves for Southington.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Boys Track
Southington 87, Northwest Catholic 61 @ Southington


Travis Daly won the discus with an effort of 105 feet, three inches and added a first-place effort in the shot put at 46 feet, eight inches for the Blue Knights in their season opener.

Anthony Bonefont won the long jump (17-4) and triple jump (35-1) for Southington. Jarrid Grimmett won the high jump (5-8) and Tyler Hyde was first in the pole vault (8-0). Kyle Hamel won the 3,200 in 10:45 and the Blue Knights’ quartet of Anthony Bonefont, Nate Bonefont, Grimmett and Stephen Barmore also won the 4x100 relay in 46.85 seconds.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Girls Track
Southington 76, Northwest Catholic 62 @ Southington

Ashley LeVasseur won the high jump (4-6) and shot put (28-4) for Southington in the season opener.

Megan Albert won the 3,200 (14 minutes), Cyndy Woolley was first in the long jump (13-1), Alyssa Lombardi won the triple jump (26-0) and Christine Swol (73-10) won the discus event.

Rhiannon Jacobs won the pole vault (9-0) and Claire Manente (79 feet) was first in the javelin for Southington.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Girls Lacrosse
Southington 11, Amity 4 @ Amity

Carolynn Keal scored five goals and Sarah Pelligrinelli added three as Southington won its season opener in Woodbridge.

Jordan Crowley had two goals and Alexa Mitchell one for Southington. Allie Abacherli had 13 saves for Southington.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Baseball
Southington 5, Glastonbury 1 @ Southington

Justin Robarge pitched a four-hitter and had all five RBI as Southington won its season opener.

Wednesday, Apr. 4 – Softball
Southington 12, East Catholic 0 @ East Catholic

Jordyn Moquin pitched a three-hitter as Southington won its season-opening game in Manchester.

Moquin and Rachel Harvey each had a triple and a two-run homer. Sarah Carangelo and Sydney Ferrante each had three hits and freshman Lauren Zazzaro had two hits including an RBI double.
