SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports at Southington High School.

After what seemed like one of the longest winters in recent memory, the weather has finally begun to turn for the better. The spring season for Southington High sports teams kicked off Wednesday as Blue Knight teams begin what they hope are successful runs into the state tournaments.

Here is a look at some of this week's results:

Wednesday, April 6 – Baseball
Southington 7, East Catholic 4 @ Manchester

Chris Lee and Zach Niles each had two hits and two RBI as the Blue Knights gave new coach Charlie Lembo his first varsity win. Tennessee-bound senior Sal Romano allowed one earned run and four hits in four innings, striking out eight and walking one while hitting a batter. Joe Sullivan pitched the final three innings for Southington, striking out three. Sullivan allowed four hits, one walk and one earned run.

Wednesday, April 6 – Softball
Southington 2, East Catholic 1 @ Southington

Senior All-State pitcher Jess Davenport pitched a three-hitter to lead the Blue Knights to the opening-day win. Alyssa Dumphy had an RBI single in the fourth to give Southington a 2-0 lead. The Blue Knights scored their first run in the second on a triple by Dumphy and a single by Rachel Harvey. Davenport allowed an unearned run in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh, finishing with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Wednesday, April 6 - Boys Lacrosse
Southington 15, South Windsor 7 @ South Windsor

Matt Prezioso scored six goals and Maryland-bound Zack Wholley added four for Southington in the season opener. Prezioso and Wholley each had three assists. Kevin Cop had three goals and Billy Thomson had 10 saves in goal for Southington.

Wednesday, April 6 - Boys Tennis
Southington 6, Tolland 1 @ Southington

No. 1 singles player James DiNello had a 6-0, 6-3 victory to lead Southington to a sweep of the four singles matches. Keith Lebel (6-2, 6-4 at No. 2), No. 3 Stephen Murphy (6-1, 6-3) and No. 4 Joey Enright (6-2, 6-2) were also winners.

At No. 2 doubles, Nate and Gary Beaumont posted a 6-2, 6-4 win and the No. 3 duo of Chris Amnott and Alex Hoder added a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory.

Thursday, April 7 - Boys Tennis
Southington 5, E.O. Smith 2 @ Southington


Lebel (No. 2, 6-4, 6-4) , No. 3 Murphy (6-3, 6-0) and No. 4 Enright (7-5, 6-2) had singles victories for Southington. Nate and Gary Beaumont won at No. 2 doubles (6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-2) picked up a point for the Blue Knights, as did the No. 3 tandem of Amnott and Hoder (5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (3)).

Friday, April 8 - Boys Tennis
Southington 6, Bristol Central 1 @ Bristol

DiNello again led a singles sweep with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1. Lebel won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, Murphy was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 3 and Enright added a 6-1, 6-3 decision at No. 4.

The No. 1 doubles team of Matt Downes and Jon Sadusky posted a 7-5, 6-0 win, while Amnott and Jordan Nadeau added a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3.

Friday, April 8 – Boys Volleyball
Southington 3, Fermi 0 @ Enfield


Mike Cannata had 12 kills and five aces as Southington opened defense of its CIAC Class L championship with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-17 win over Fermi. Dan Carbone had eight kills, two aces, six blocks and eight digs for the Blue Knights. Chris Sherwill had five kills and six digs, Zac Nichols had seven blocks, Shane Quadrato had four blocks and Matt Russo added 15 digs and four aces. Ryan Masters had 22 assists and Alex Zajda had eight for Southington.
