SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports for Southington High School.

It didn’t take long for the weather to have an impact on the fall sports season as the second week of action for teams was marked by rain and postponements.

Saturday, Sept. 24

Football – Southington 3, New Britain 0

Friday’s rain pushed the CCC West Division I opener for both teams back a day. The result was a defensive struggle played in muggy conditions under the lights at Fontana Field.

Senior Sean Hammell, a first year player who converted from soccer, kicked a 24-yard field goal with 6:08 left in the fourth quarter for the game’s only points. A 41-yard interception return by Brian Kaminsky set up the score and Jared DeGumbia’s late pick sealed the victory for the Blue Knights (2-0).

Corbin Garry and David DiNeno recovered fumbles for Southington, which totaled only 102 yards of total offense.

Saturday, Sept. 24 – Boys/Girls Cross Country
Stratton Brook Invitational, Simsbury

Senior Kyle Hamel finished second overall, leading the Blue Knights’ boys team to a sixth-place finish in the large school race. The Southington girls team placed 10th in the large school race.

Friday, Sept. 23 – Boys Soccer
Farmington 3, Southington 0

The Indians scored three goals in the final 18 minutes to defeat Southington in Farmington. Billy Queen had 11 saves in goal for the Blue Knights.

Friday, Sept. 23 – Girls Swimming
Southington 85, E.O. Smith 85

The Southington YMCA was the site for the race tie. Individual winners for Southington were Jenny Drozd (500-yard freestyle, 6:27.19), Sarah Kreszik (50 free, 31.12), Molly Potter (100 backstroke, 1:16.12) and Haley Marquardt (100 free, 1:00.70).

The foursome of Drozd, Marquardt, Laurel Dean and Emily Feras won the 400 freestyle relay in 4:17.94. Southington was without the services of top swimmer Melanie Mongillo (illness).

Wednesday, Sept. 21 – Field Hockey
Mercy 1, Southington 0

Sarah Bower’s goal midway through the first half was the difference as the Tigers won in Middletown. Suzie Marcoux had 14 saves for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, Sept. 21 – Boys Soccer
Southington 2, Northwest Catholic 1 (OT)

Steve Boyington scored with 3:16 left in the second overtime to give the host Blue Knights the victory. Boyington converted a free kick from Steve DePonte for the game-winner.

Jared DeFeo scored with 5:36 left in regulation to tie the score for Southington. Billy Queen had nine saves for the Blue Knights.

Wednesday, Sept. 21 – Girls Soccer
Northwest Catholic 2, Southington 0

Madison Borowiec and Michelle Medina scored as the Indians defeated the Blue Knights in West Hartford.

Wednesday, Sept. 21 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Farmington 2

Tory Broytman had 26 kills and Corinne Horanzy added 25 kills and 18 digs in the Blue Knights’ road win. Game scores were 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 24-26, 15-11. Emily Durocher had eight kills and Danielle Kaminsky added 49 assists and 12 digs.

Tuesday, Sept. 20 – Field Hockey
Southington 107, Bristol Eastern 76

Laurel Dean, Haley Marquardt and Melanie Mongillo were double-winners for the Blue Knights in their season opener in Bristol.

Dean won the 200 yard individual medley (2:30.83) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.73), Mongillo was first in the 50 freestyle (26.90) and 100 freestyle (1:00.67) and Marquardt in the 200 freestyle (2:12.16) and 500 freestyle (6:07.92).

The Blue Knights also won two relays. Dean, Molly Potter, Aly Baribault and Sarah Krezek won the 200 medley in 2:06.66. Mongillo, Dean, Baribault and Emily Feras won the 200 freestyle in 1:53.63.

Tuesday, Sept. 20 – Field Hockey
Southington 1, Newington 0 (OT)

Kristen Brandien scored 2:30 into overtime as the Blue Knights won in Newington. Suzie Marcoux had eight saves for Southington.

Monday, Sept. 19 – Girls Soccer
Southington 6, Conard 1

Erica Kosienski had two goals and two assists as Southington won at home. Nicole Shorette, Emilee Kemnitz, Christie Freer and Megan McLaughlin also scored for the Blue Knights. McLaughlin and Sarah Caisse combined for three saves.

Monday, Sept. 19 – Boys Soccer
Conard 5, Southington 0

Rodrigo Giraldo had two goals and an assist as the Chieftains rolled in West Hartford. Billy Queen had 12 saves in goal for Southington.

Monday, Sept. 19 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Northwest Catholic 0

Corinne Horanzy had nine kills and seven digs as host Southington rolled to a 25-9, 25-9, 25-6 victory. Danielle Kaminsky had 21 assists and five digs for the Blue Knights.

Tory Broytman and Emily Durocher had six kills each, Cyndy Woolley had five kills and Kayla Padroff had five digs for Southington.
