SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at the week in sports at Southington High School.

The regular season is coming to a close for most of the Southington High sports teams, but the week will long be remembered for the biggest October snowstorm in the state’s history.

Saturday, Oct. 29 – Football

Hall 22, Southington 6

Sophomore quarterback Stephen Barmore returned from a shoulder injury, but the Blue Knights couldn’t overcome five turnovers in the loss to the Warriors in snowy in West Hartford.

Southington even had to endure a 30-minute delay in the second half due to lightning. Andrew Walowski (6 carries, 37 yards) scored on a 15-yard run for the Blue Knights on the last play of the third quarter. Barmore completed 15 of 27 pass attempts for 185 yards, but had a 48-yard pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown by Hall’s Adam Glynn.

Saturday, Oct. 29 – Boys Cross Country
Class LL Championships at Wickham Park, Manchester

Kyle Hamel finished 28th with a time of 17:03 as the Blue Knights placed 19th out of 21 teams.

Nick Garcia was 58th in 17:30, Damiaen Florian was 127th in 18:40, Jacob Harton was 128th in 18:43, Miles Groom finished 141st in 19:07, Joseph Pappalardo was 143rd in 19:12 and Jordan Gray was 145th in 19:18.

Saturday, Oct. 29 – Girls Cross Country
Class LL Championships at Wickham Park, Manchester

Amanda Hamel was Southington’s top finisher, placing 96th with a time of 22:35. Raquel Romano was 107th in 22:57, Eileen Germain was 114th in 23:08 and Stephanie O’Keefe finished 117th in 23:13. Hannah Chamis was 125th in 23:32, Laura Wilcox was 126th in 23:33 and Abigael Guthrie was 131st in 24:01.

Friday, Oct. 28 – Girls Soccer
Simsbury 1, Southington 0

Megan McLaughlin and Sarah Caisse combined for four saves in the Blue Knights’ road loss to the Trojans.

Friday, Oct. 28 – Boys Soccer
Simsbury 2, Southington 1

Kyle Connolly scored in the second half for the Blue Knights in the home loss. Pete DelBuono had an assist and Bill Queen had nine saves for Southington. The loss ended a week that began on Wednesday with a 4-0 loss at Hall in West Hartford.

Friday, Oct. 28 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, New Britain 0

The Blue Knights concluded the regular season with a 25-12, 25-15, 25-8 victory over the Hurricanes in New Britain.

Southington finished 17-1 overall and 14-0 in the CCC West. Tori Broytman had 19 kills, while Corinne Horanzy seven kills and six aces. Danielle Kaminsky had 28 assists for the Blue Knights.

Friday, Oct. 28 – Girls Swimming
Berlin 87, Southington 83

Haley Marquardt won the 200 freestyle in 2:12.64 and the 500 freestyle in 5:57.72 for the Blue Knights in the season-ending loss to the Redcoats in Southington.

Melanie Mongillo won the 50 freestyle in 26.26 seconds as Southington finished the season 5-6-1. Laurel Dean, Sarah Krzesik, Alyson Baribault and Mongillo teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.00.

Dean won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.71 and Allison Hammersley won the 100 backstroke in 1:19.87.

Wednesday, Oct. 26 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Simsbury 0

Danielle Kaminsky had 34 assists to go over 1,000 for her career in the Blue Knights’ 25-22, 25-12, 25-15 home victory.

Kaminsky also had two kills and eight digs. Tori Broytman had 14 kills, while Corinne Horanzy had 18 kills and 10 digs for Southington. Kayla Padroff had six digs and Sara Malicka added five kills for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Oct. 25 – Field Hockey
Southington 3, Windsor 2

Sarah Collier scored all three goals for Southington in the win over the Warriors at home. Collier scored off a corner with five seconds left to break a 2-2 tie. Val Szmurlo had nine saves for the Blue Knights, who dropped a 3-0 decision to Nonnewaug on Wednesday in Woodbury.

Tuesday, Oct. 25 – Girls Soccer
Southington 2, Hall 0

Erica Kosienski and Nicole Wershoven scored in the second half as Southington posted the home victory.

Sarah Caisse and Megan McLaughlin combined to make six saves in goal for the Blue Knights.

Tuesday, Oct. 25 – Girls Swimming
Newington 94, Southington 90

Haley Marquardt was a double winner for Southington in the road loss, finishing first in the 200 freestyle (2:11.77) and 500 freestyle (5:51.05).

Melanie Mongillo won the 100 freestyle (59.92 seconds) and Jenny Drozd was first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.02). Marquardt, Mongillo, Drozd and Laurel Dean won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.38.

Monday, Oct. 24 – Girls Volleyball
Southington 3, Hall 0

Samantha Vitale was 28-for-28 serving, including four aces, and also had five digs and seven kills for the Blue Knights in the 25-4, 25-11, 25-19 victory over the Warriors in West Hartford.

Kayla Padroff had eight digs and six aces, while Kaylee Kolodziejczyk had four kills for Southington.
