SHS Sports Wrap

A look back at this week in sports at Southington High School as Volleyball remains the only team left in the hunt for a title.

After a rare October snowstorm caused statewide chaos and an entire week off for , only the volleyball team remains among three squads that qualified for CIAC state tournaments.

Saturday, Nov. 12 – Girls volleyball, Class LL 2nd round
Southington 3, Danbury 0

After a 17-1 regular season that included the CCC West title, fourth-seeded Southington opened post-season play with a 25-17, 25-16, 25-10 win over the 13th-seeded Hatters.

Danielle Kaminsky had 34 assists, five aces and eight digs for the Blue Knights. Corinne Horanzy had 14 kills and four digs, while Tori Broytman had 12 kills, seven aces, three blocks and six digs for Southington.

Saturday, Nov. 12 – Girls Swimming, Class LL qualifying

Haley Marquardt, Alyson Baribault, Laurel Dean and Melanie Mongillo combined to finish in 10th-place with a time of 1:47.69 in the competition held at East Hartford High. The quartet finished 11th in the 400-meter freestyle relay with a time of 4:02.11.

Marquardt was 33rd in the 200-meter freestyle (2:12.33) and 36th in the 500-meter freestyle (6:01.75). Mongillo was 22nd in the 50-meter freestyle (26.69 seconds) and 29th in the 100-meter freestyle (59.62 seconds). Dean placed 29th in the 200-meter individual medley (2:27.19) and 12th in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:12.49). Baribault was 22nd in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:14.67.

The foursome of Molly Potter, Jenny Drozd, Sarah Krzesik and Emily Ferens was 15th in the 200-meter medley relay (2:10.05) and Krzesik placed 21st in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:04.96.

At the Class LL diving competition at Hamden High on Nov. 10, Amanda Mirando finished in 20th place with a total of 234.10 points.

Friday, Nov. 11 – Football
Southington 17, Manchester 8

Matt O’Connor rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as the Blue Knights (5-3) secured at least a .500 season with the home victory over the Indians.

Corbin Garry added a 45-yard touchdown run for Southington. The Blue Knights held Manchester to 151 total yards of offense.

Thursday, Nov. 10 – Girls Soccer, Class LL First Round
Masuk 2, Southington 1 (OT, 3-1 PKs)

Erica Kosienski scored in the second half to give No. 21 Southington the lead in Monroe, but the 12th-seeded Panthers scored with 1:19 left in regulation and went on to win.

Christie Freer had an assist on Kosienski’s goal. Allie Vachon had the only penalty kick goal for the Blue Knights (9-7-1). Megan McLaughlin and Sarah Caisse combined for seven saves in goal for Southington.

Thursday, Nov. 10 – Field Hockey, Class LL qualifying
McMahon 5, Southington 0

Sophomore Nicole Lue had three goals as No. 15 McMahon ended the season for No. 18 Southington (6-9-0-2) with the tournament loss in Norwalk.

Tuesday, Nov. 8 – Cross Country, State Open
Kyle Hamel was the only Southington participant in the competition, moved to Hammonasset State Park in Madison. The senior finished in 51st place with a time of 16:54.

Tuesday, Nov. 8 – Girls Soccer
Southington 8, New Britain 0

Erica Kosienski and Nicole Wershoven each scored two goals as Southington closed out the regular season with the home victory.

Megan McLaughlin, Emily Lippincott, Victoria Plante and Tina Albiach also scored and Sarah Caisse had only save for the Blue Knights.

Sunday, Nov. 6 – Boys Soccer
RHAM 2, Southington 1 (OT)

Needing a victory to qualify for the Class LL tournament, the Blue Knights (5-10-1) came up short with the loss to the unbeaten Sachems at DePaolo Middle School.

Sean Conway scored in the second half for Southington and Bill Queen had three saves.

Saturday, Nov. 5 – Field Hockey
Southington 5, Maloney 2

Kristen Brandien scored two goals as Southington, needing a win to reach the Class L tournament, posted the victory at Falcon Field in Meriden.

Alexa Mitchel, Sarah Collier (assist) and Casey Sullivan also scored for Southington and Susie Marcoux had three saves.

Friday, Nov. 4 – Boys Soccer
Southington 1, New Britain 1 (OT)

Sean Conway scored a first-half goal to give Southington the lead, but host New Britain forged the deadlock with a second-half tally. Bill Queen had eight saves in goal for the Blue Knights.
